USCG documentation $75.00 per year

Oh trust me in Florida and Michigan I have to pay for state registration also, I just don’t have to display the registration numbers on both sides of my bow. Just the state registration sticker which is pretty discreet.

Same here in NY

In the great state of Indiana you used be able to federally document and you would only have to register in state. They had the sales tax tied to titling so when I bought my first boat I was able to circumvent paying sales tax by federally documenting. They got smarter over the years and the sales tax is now tied to either act, titling or registering. My current lien holder didn't require federal documentation and with no immediate benefit to me I have foregone that on my current boat

Thank you for starting this thread, it reminded me to file my paperwork. With Woody's link it's done for the next three years.

I don't understand why these companies that play the gray area, offering a service with the look of official papers, can't be stopped. I admit I fell for it when it came to my SCC paperwork. Payed a company $150 to do a $100 job. Papers looked almost identical to my SCC paperwork. I feel so damn stupid I fell for it.

We have to have the state registration stickers on the side even if we to document. Missouri needs their $100 every few years.

In Wisconsin the state stickers have to be on the stern...so there's nothing at all on the bow.

The companies are not doing anything illegal, just like me standing in front of the free watercooler at work and offering drinks for $100, no one has to pay, and some may have a reason they want someone to do it for them.

The bigger waste of money is initial documentation for a new owner. The company I was steered to wanted something like $800 to do it. I did it myself for a fraction of that and a few minutes of my time.
But hey, some people have neither the time nor the desire to do it themselves, so I guess it’s not a bad little niche business for someone.
