Hey guys an' gals, does anyone have any experience with trailer insurance and registration procedures regarding the purchase of an already licensed trailer in Washington State being transported to Canada. We're not sure how we're going to legally get the boat and trailer home. If the current owner sells it to us, then his reggy and insurance might not cover us.

I bought my boat in Washington and was able to insure through Canadian inc Co before we drought it to Canada.
I have a 21 foot boat I trailer also and I insure it through my home insurance. I have bought a used SUV in the US and they issued me a temporary US Licence for it. With it I was able to get auto insurance in Canada that covered me in the US.

I brought two boats on trailers across the border with out any issues. As far as insurance goes, my auto insurance covers anything I tow as far as liability goes. Talk to your insurance company regarding coverage for the value of the trailer itself. As I was buying a boat as well as the trail I made sure I had coverage on the boat as soon as the documents were signed to make the boat mine. The sellers insurance definitely won't cover you.
The first boat I bough had the California plates on it from the original owner when I got it. No issues but don't know what would have happened if I got stopped in the US or Canada.
The second boat I picked up the trailer in Miami, drove to San Francisco got the boat and back to Calgary all without plates on the trailer. Had a few occasions where a Cop pulled in behind me in the US (man there are a lot of Cops on the road there) but never stopped me.

As far getting it across the boarder goes the only thing they are looking for is a bill of sale. Pay the GST (and PST if you are in one of the provinces that screws you even more) and you're done at the boarder. You will still have to get the trailer inspected and require a statement from the manufacturer of the trailer that it complies with Canadian standards.
