US Senate unveils $1Trillion COVID Relief package

You can bail out those cities with our dime but you can't stop the corruption that is rampant in the city governments. Had they bailed out the cities we'd have been back here at this point in just a few years after the cities got themselves in the same position.

Insanity: If you keep doing the same thing and expect different results.

Well I'm glad they aren't handing out $600/week anymore. It needs to be proportionate to your income. Me and my wife were figuring it out yesterday. In my town an unemployed worker that made about $15/hour and is on unemployment would now be among the highest paid here. Not that I live in a poor town but the median household income here was about $43,000 in 2017. So the average worker makes $21,500. $600/week is about $31,000/year. If both are unemployed then they get $62,000/year plus their regular unemployment benefits so their salary would likely double.

Senate Republicans’ new $1 trillion coronavirus stimulus package would restore hundreds of millions of dollars in Pentagon spending that the Trump administration redirected to help pay for building President Trump’s border wall.

Projects involving Navy aircraft and ships and Air Force planes that the Trump administration canceled this year so the money could pay for the wall have reappeared in the GOP package, introduced Monday. The programs are part of $30 billion in defense spending in the GOP plan to which Democrats are objecting.

The Unions. The police union members are leaving the Dems in droves due to their betrayal on defunding.
So the Dems are doubling down w the teachers union so the little snowflakes have to stay home, teachers don’t have to go to work but still get full pay.

This is a huge money scam. Big business in pharma, insurance companies, hospitals all being subsidized by taxpayers. Even the lazy commies who rather collect than work.

November 3rd can’t come soon enough.

My wife was notified Friday that her school will be open full-time. They are required to wear masks all day, including students. But everyone goes all day long 5 days a week

That's great news, The kids need to get back at it and get dirty again. I bet there will be more rampant snotty noses and what used to be just normal creeping grud minor illness that comes from kids being kids. That's okay its part of life. The challenge will be parents, teachers and school admin folks identifying it as such and not treating every case a COVID 19 and quarantining kids for having a runny nose. It will be a Shit Show for sure! Lets hope we have had enough of the hysteria and people just carry on already!
Carpe Diem

So wife was talking to her 'friend' today whose husband was laid off during the early parts of the pandemic. She was complaining to my wife today about how much money they lost with him going back to work. He makes $15/hour. She said his take home pay is $900 every 2 weeks when working. When he was on unemployment he was getting $2100 every 2 weeks. She is upset that he went back to work. In fact he tried turning it down when they called him back but they told him he would lose his unemployment if he didn't.

You seem obsessed with the 'friends' situation. Those numbers don't work out, I think she's just messing with you.:D

I liked the $600/wk, I want it back, a little more would be nice too.

It's not their situation. It's the 'free' money the dems love to hand out. And I use them as the example because it's the only one that has told the actual numbers. And why wouldn't they work out? Of the $2100 $1200 would be the 'extra' so his regular unemployment would have been $900/2 weeks. His standard gross pay was $1200/2 weeks. He got some OT so that might be factored into what he was getting for unemployment. Point being, his 'salary' more than doubled for being on unemployment. So what is the incentive to go back to work? And who will end up paying for this free money they are handing out? I said from the start that they should supplement your income to get you back to the same level that you made before, not more. I'm fine with that. And trust me, she wasn't 'messing' with us. This girl couldn't spell cat if you spotted her the C and the T. And I'm not exaggerating.

Democrats want to supress free thinkers by buying them with all these freebee`s.

Their regular unemployment is calculated based on the gross earnings. If you meet the other earnings criteria it amounts to about 1/2 the weekly earnings. That would be about $300 a week in regular unemployment, add the extra $600 and you're now at $900/week. It seems like he's getting another excess 300 bucks but what if that helps him maintain the family's health insurance? Maybe then it wouldn't seem like he's coming out like a bandit.

It's my understanding that overall the states didn't have the ability to treat each taxpayer individually and still get assistance out in a timely fashion so they decided to just throw the flat $600 weekly benefit at everyone, it was easier and faster.

FWIW, somewhere around 1/3 of individuals are not made whole by the extra $600. You know one of them at least....that's me, well not really me, it's my wife, I'm on the dole.

What is the incentive to go back to work you ask? You've seen it with your 'friend', if you don't go back to work the UC will be cut off.

As far as your 'friend' goes, I predict come next spring they'll be pissing and moaning when they get a big income tax bill because all that UC including the extra $600 is taxable income.

Woody I may have this wrong but unemployment was never meant to make anyone "whole" it was supposed to be for only 9 weeks. One of our past presidents extended those weeks and made it easier to keep those benefits. Employers, like me are no longer allowed to report that I offered recipients a job. It is a invasion of their privacy.

Small companies like mine can not compete with the Feds handing out $600 a week checks.

I understand that unemployment was not intended to make people whole. My point was that not everyone that receives the 600 bucks is coming out better than when they were working.

So, last night, President Trump signed Executive Orders that will:
- Stop Social Security tax deductions for already-employed individuals making $104K or less for the rest of the year. Cost appears to be about half a trillion dollars. It's starting as a deferral but the President says he's going to make it permanent. Neither side in Congress had this item on their proposed relief lists as they didn't think it doesn't make sense to benefit those with jobs when there are lots without. Advocates say the ones benefited will spend the money and therefore provide a stimulus.
- Provide $400/week additional unemployment. Total average unemployment benefit will now be about $800/week depending on where the person was employed. So, $20/hour instead of $30/hour. Looks like the cost will be at least half a trillion if not more.
How is this different than the behavior castigated earlier in this thread? My view is that both sides are guilty of playing the same game in terms of passing out the freebies, the only difference being the constituencies that get them. In this case, I think it might be worth it if the combined efforts prevent a depression and the stimulus only lasts as long as it's needed.

That I agree with. It's unfortunate that those folks are bunched in with the folks that are make 3 to 4 times the money they did while being employed.

The issue is the massive debt spending for all these bailouts. Just as when the Fed bailed out GM, the large banks and brokerages. We’re already behaving more and more like a socialist society. No politician is going to want to vote to end the handouts.
