I was going to upgrade my sound system myself but after reading all the post on upgrading I decided to have it done by a local company. 6 channel amp, 1 sub, and 4 speakers with seperate tweeters installed for $1,800 after tax. They use JL audio systems. So is this a reasonable price? They do alot of boats and do really good work. My other question is they said they will hook up my old speakers to the back of the boat if I want. Did anyone do this and what do you guys think of that? Thanks

The quick answer is "yes", it is probably reasonable. I just installed all JL Audio components and purchased all my gear from various online sources to keep the cost down but still paid:

M4300 4ch Amp - $275
M1400 mono-block Sub Amp - $250
10" Sub - $225
6.5" x 4 speakers - $500
Cables/distribution blocks/fuse blocks/etc - $150

Total = $1400, not counting my time of course but things are routed the way I want them.

The 7.7" with separate tweets run a little higher I think. I recommend pricing out the components they are installing which will tell you what you are paying for the install.

Not sure of the quality of your "old" speakers but if you want some installed at the back, I would just add another pair of JLs while you're at it.

I checked my prices of the materials and they seem to be inline with yours. M101b5-4 JL sub $200, 4 (2-pair) m770-cts speakers $250x2=$500, m6450 amp $375, misc parts $100. That puts labor at $600. They said my speakers would be fine for the rear install. So how does your system sound? What do you think about putting speakers on the the back of the boat?

I'm considering doing this with my old speakers.

I like my system.....even sounds great at moderate level which was one of my goals. I also ran aux. cables to helm for future Ipod/MP3 cradle, installed Sirius radio and a remote bass control near the dash for the mono Amp. All easy stuff, cheap and nice to have.

I don't really have a need for speakers in the back but can also see why some would. Years ago.....probably a must.

I also installed a second remote aft, inside next to the door. If you do install back speakers, you my want a rear remote if one is not already installed.

Good luck and enjoy!
