Upgrade VesselView "Classic" to VesselView 7

Just checking on any updates - I have the 5ecd gen and it's all cabled into the CAN connector and absolutely no love :) I read and reread the instructions and thankfully found this post so I can stop messing with it. This should be a no brainer.

Bennett tab sensor kit going in.

Last project is trim sensors are NOT reporting data into the VV7...caliberation just goes to zero. Any advice on this would be appreciated. New sensors, not digital, but I hear you can use the existing ones.

BigBoysToys,

What ever became of your harness situation? Did you ever get to the bottom of it all? Getting ready to do this and wondering if I am going to run into similar issues.

MancaveII,

Putting my VV7 in in the next few weeks and had been considering the NMEA tab kit for the Bennet tabs. I though I had read, or perhaps mercury or bennet told me that it wouldn't work. Do you have the GPS unlock module? I am wondering if perhaps it gets picked up by the Simrad side of things rather then the Mercury side, although I am not even sure how all that works yet.. I believe we are at the same marina, so I may check in with you for progress at some point(or Vessel View 7 pointers). While trying to troubleshoot a sea temp display issue, I did notice a harness on my engines labeled as "Smart tabs", but I can't find any reference to what that is online or in any manual.

Bankyf,

Sorry that I don't have a better answer but I never did anything with mine. I just plugged in the new VV7, ran the setup and it works. When I first turn the keys on I get a list of 4 or 5 engine alarms but the second I start up, they clear and don't come back until the next cycle of the keys. System had been rock solid otherwise and has proven to be pretty accurate so far. At some point I plan to dive back into it but right now, its not on the top of the list of priorities.

Well I guess I better research the Bennet tab kit before I go to install it and it doesn't work. :) I assumed, just like the generator, it would work given Sea Ray even has the cables listed in the parts manual...but of course that was for the smartcraft display, not the VV.

I'm at Hope Springs, you're welcome to check out the setup...everything else works including the sea temp. Just PM me when you want to get together.

ADDED: I have a RayMarine e7D display as well with HD color radar - everything is connected on a seatalk backbone and less a pending update for the VHF system, it all works...the data (GPS, fuel senders, engine, nav, etc.) all move between displays with no issues. I use the internal GPS on the e7 and the water temp from the original factory transducer. The new transducer for the e7 is depth, but I can switch back and forth if one of them failed. It's been a learning experience, but the VV7 is a great improvement over the SmartCraft display that I could no longer read. The only thing I still messing with is the stern drive tilt information that I cannot seem to get to report to the VV7, trim tabs (sent a note to Tom), and the generator. The generator one seems odd as clearly there used to be support for it with the SmartCraft displays??? Hopefully Kaz gets resolution and an update is pushed out.

That's normal, as long as it goes to Green OK after it completes the full cycle scan. Ultimately you should not have to clear any messages and you get the green light...

Do I understand correctly that the your vessel view 7 is effectively functioning as a Simrad NSS7 via the GPS on the Raymarine e7d? It is advertised that it will only unlock that functionality with the Mercury NMEA GPS module or another Simrad unit, but Mercury documentation for the product leaves a lot to be desired. I would like to check out your setup. I'll PM you or track you down at the marina sometime. Hopefully we can get the tabs figured out. I have been ready to pull the trigger on those for a while. Wish I could remember where I heard or read that it didn't work so I could go back and verify. Would love to actually know my tab position for once.

EDIT: In thinking about it more, will the tabs work on your e7? Not ideal, but better than nothing.

The e7D and Vessel View can share almost anything...my e7 has the fish finder/depth/nav/engines/gauges/tanks/etc. It can share almost all of that with the VV7. While I keep the engine gauge mode on the VV7, you can switch to other menus and getting navigational heading, etc. I don't think I've ever displayed the fish finder feature on the VV7, not sure that's possible, but I haven't had the need to do it. You basically end up with two multi function displays that you customize to your preferences. I keep the chart plotter with radar overlay (nights) on the e7D and the engine/gauges (MPH, Tach, Fuel, PSI, etc.) on the VV7. The VV7 has a great space for tabs and trim...just can't get them to display :)

My two backbones are SeaTalk and NMEA2000...basically two variations for a Ethernet network.

For anyone who has done the upgrade, do you need the NEMA2000 wiring harness to work with Vessel View 7?

I've thought about this upgrade for my 2010 350 with DTS.
I just want to think through everything I will need to make it work.

I know I need the cable to get the engine data to my Raymarine.

Actually, the vesselview 7 does the same thing as the part you linked. It will output all of the Smartcraft data as NMEA2000. If you did not want to add the vesselview, and rather view all the Smartcraft data on another MFD display, the part you linked is what you would need.

This is is good to know. So I can invest in VV7 and have the new screen and layout and feed my chartplotter. Or buy the other piece and just get the data.

Any progress on this? I went ahead and ordered the kit and will install it this weekend/next week since my boats is out on the pad. If it won't work now, perhaps something I purchase in the future will work with it. I did find out today that the NMEA converter for this kit is a lowrance part, the same company that makes the VV7, so maybe we will get lucky. Although, evidently it is an outdated, no longer supported Lowrance part.
