My 98 270DA has the radio, cassette tape, and remote at the helm. Can I select a newer clarion to use the remote and connections but has the AUX input for MP3s instead. Haven't had much luck talking with Clarion.

It may depend on which clarion unit you have now and which one you replace it with. I had an original clarion head unit in my '99 210. Last summer I replaced it with the clarion m475 head unit, with and aux jack. The wiring harness plugs did not match the old unit, but all wire colors matched. The new head unit accepted the old plug for the remote with out any issues. I am able to control the stereo that is in the glove box from the original helm remote.

does anyone know if the clarion wired control will work with a non clarion brand head unit? wiring appears to be similair/same

I doubt it. Also, the remote I had on my boat wouldn't work with newer Clarion head units, either - they moved from 6 to 8 (I believe) wires. I ended up just going with a Fusion unit to replace the whole thing. I really wanted the zoned abilities, so I can run music in the cockpit while leaving the cabin quiet. Turned out to be a good decision, since the boat actually has 3 zones of audio on it (a prior owner added an amp running a couple extra speakers and subwoofer in the cockpit). I'll probably add another remote to control the amplified zone from the rear seating area or transom.

I still need to drill the bigger hole in the helm for the remote, though. My Clarion remote looks like this, if it helps:

I replaced the original Clarion unit with a Clarion CMD 5 and it works with my original wired remote that looks exactly like the one pictured. The CMD5 is an older unit now and is non-bluetooth and needs an external iPOD adapter that does not work that well. However, it saved rewiring the remote. I am going to buy a Bluetooth Aux receiver unit this year that will allow me to stream any Bluetooth audio source so that will solve that problem. BT receivers are only about $30 now so it is a cheap way t upgrade the stereo to BT without replacing.
