I have a 2003 320 with twin 350 mags. They have CAN BUS outputs but are not Smartcraft. I want to upgrade to Ray Marine es97 but have been told it will not work. Some groups have said that a Gateway plugged into the CAN BUS should deliver NMEA 2000 to the es 97. I know nothing about this other than what I have been told. I'm not giving up! HELP!!!

Are you sure about the CanBus statement? Have you checked with Merc using your serial numbers? Sea Ray had Smartcraft in 2001, and some engines like our 496 were SC capable, but rigged with traditional analog gauges. Based on my research it appears SR did not roll out SC across the product line until the mid 2000s although many of the power plants had the capability. I assume they waited to run out pre-existing contracts for analog components, and to modify older engine designs so they could offer a uniform product. So the short form is you may have engines that support SC. If you haven't already, You should be able to check the serial numbers with Mercruiser CS and confirm that.

If the engines have SC, the gateway should work. You might need more hardware than just he gateway, but it would be do able.

If the engines do not have the SC capability, then the gateway won't work. To get NMEA 2000 output you would have to re-rig the engines with third party sensors (oil pressure, volts/amps, water temp etc. and work through some form of third party "gateway" device. Since you would probably would have to discard the existing engine sensors you would then have to re-gauge your helm to retain functioning gauges. Like many problems this could be solved by throwing lots of money at it.

Agree with Henry. And for the record, my 2002 320DA was Smartcraft capable, but rigged with analog gauges. I added the Smartcraft SC1000 gauges in 2007, and added a SC5000 a few years ago. Original motors.

I called Merc and my engines are SC. The local Sea Ray dealer was wrong. The company that would install the new nav called Merc and they sent him all he will need to do it. Moving forward. Thank you for your input!

Sorry to revive this thread, but can someone help me out with the following scenario? I have a 2006 340DA with 8.1 Horizons/V Drives. I am updating my electronics, going with Axiom 9RV plus an Axiom 7 to go where the VV used to go. I am thinking I want to keep the old VesselView Classic patched in, as backup and calibration, etc. Can someone tell me what the process is to patch in the Mercury Gateway to get the engine info in to my Axiom, but leave the existing VesselView in place? I understand how to add an NMEA2000 backbone, etc. Just need to know where and how to bring the Merc stuff in.
