I have an update on my heating issue. This weekend I replace the waterpump in the outdrive and I think that was a waste of time, the old one from last summer looked fine. I did notice that the hose that runs from the lower unit to the transom housing and then to the thermostat housing had a kink in it where it bends coming thru the gimabal area. It was pinched over half its diameter. I removed it and its the correct hose, looks like heavy heater hose, 3/4" and about 16" long. It looks like it was too long and when the drive was down it started to kink the hose. I asked the parts guy if there was supposed to be a molded hose there and he said no, the one I have is the right one. I figured it would kink again if I replaced it with the same hose. So what I did was get some 3/4" wet exhaust hose with the wire woven into the casing and used that instead. It doesn't even show any bending at that spot now. BTW the kinked hose was REPLACED last spring when my outdrives were rebuilt. I noticed a slight bend in the hose at that location and called it to the service guys' attention and was told it was fine, and it was for the first half of the summer. I think the constant bend and the aging of the hose caused the bend to worsen. When running the engine at low rpm only a small fraction of the cooling water could get thru, but as rpms increase, more pressure from the pump probablly expanded the hose and improved flow. Thats my theory anyway, I'll know better in a week or so when I put her in the water.
The starboard hose was in similar shape but not as badly kinked, so I replaced that one while I was at it and the boat still on the hard.
I can say that that hose is a BEAR to change with the drive installed! The clamps are hard to get to and you have to get creative with tools to work the clamps on and tighten them.

OH, almost forgot, I'm going to pay a visit to the shop that did my work and show them the clamps I removed from those hoses. The worm gears were so RUSTED that they would have failed shortly. They weren't all stainless clamps, looks like they came from a hardware store. Not what should be used on hoses UNDERWATER!
