Well, lastnight it was time to put her away for the winter. I pulled my boat into the garage and the winterizing began. As i was almost done, i was going to put the motor up..........hit the up button, and nothing. The trailer button works, and trim down works just fine.............but it wont trim up..........without looking at it, i believe i have the quicksilver 3000??? control. The trim gauge doesnt work, and i know i have a bad wire on one of the sending units...........could this be the cause??

Or

Can this switch be replaced, or do i have to buy a whole new throttle/gear selector??.......if the switch can be rplaced how does one do it, and where can i get one from??

thanks

Hey.. Ok. So I'm assuming you've checked the fuse? Do you definitely know that its the switch on the Quicksilver control? It could be the sender though because the sender might be saying that the unit is already in the "up" position. The sender would therefore stop any movement upwards to stop the leg hitting the transom.

I have not yet checked any fuses, but assumed that since trim down, and trailer up work, it cant be a fuse.

As far as the sender, that is my second guess, im looking for more input, to see if that would cause my issues

Yes it could cause the issue.

Your problem is probably the trim limit switch, mounted on the gimbal ring. The teeth on the insert can get worn, so the hinge pin doesn't grab as the drive tilts. It slips until the contact stays in the zone considered to be the trim up limit, even when it's not. It's hard to explain how it works. When you take it off, just a couple screws, you'll see what's happening.
I replaced mine by cutting and splicing using double heat shrink tubing. The electrical works fine but I could never get the switch seated properly, like it comes from the factory. It failed the last two seasons. I think it has a lot to do with the condition of the gimbal ring. If there's pitting the surfaces aren't true and water gets in.

I think you guys mean the trim limit switch on the port side of the gimbal ring.

To check the limit switch, locate the 2 black wires (a pair stuck together) that come thru the transom and go into the engine wiring harness.
There are 4 wires, 2 pair.
At the end of these wires is 2 bullet connectors. On the limit switch wires the connectors are both male. If you find the pair of wires that have a male and female you have the trim position sender.

Un plug the 2 male plugs of the pair and short together the females using a jumper wire. If the leg now trims up, the limit switch is bad. If not, the switch on the throttle handle is bad.

I’ll bet 100 to 1 it’s not the trim-up button.

The hockey puck looking sensors on your outdrive are the likely issue.

You need 805320A03 Single Station Trim Sender Kit.

One, starboard side, is the trim guage, the port side is the trim limit switch.

You can buy a pair for about $100.

Pull the drive so you can access the wires; replace the pucks, problem solved.

Replacing Your Trim Limit and Trim Position Senders

Alpha's and Bravo's have two Trim Senders.

They are mounted on either side of the Gimbal Ring.
One sender is for the Trim Gauge and the other sender is for the Trim Limit.

The Trim Limit Switch is mounted on the port side and the Trim Position Switch is mounted on the starboard side.

The switches are prone to damage from water intrusion. Water enters the switch and ruins the contacts. The wires tend to soften and/or rot with age and water leaks into the switch through the wires.

This is why the new switches are sold with the new wires are already attached at the factory. Always replace the wires when replacing the switches.

Symptoms
The Trim Position Switch operates the Trim Gauge.
When the Trim Position Switch fails, the gauge usually pegs to "full up".

The Trim Limit Switch prevents the driver from 'over-trimming" the outdrive while under way.
It is an important limiting feature which prevents damage to the drive and/or loss of control of the vessel.
Trimming the drive unit up too high while the boat is running can cause serious damage and/or injury.
When this switch fails, the TRIM BUTTON does not work. Only the TRAILER BUTTON will work.

When one switch fails, you will end up replacing both switches. This is because the switches are sold in sets of two. Both the Trim Limit and the Trim Sender switches are sold together as a pair.

Replacing the switches requires removal of the drive and bell housing.
These are the same procedures for replacing the Ujoint Bellows.

Trim Sender Units
The trim senders are no longer sold individually.
The Port switch is the Trim Limit Switch. This limits how far up the drive will trim.
The Starboard switch is the Trim Level Sender switch. This sends a signal to the trim gauge.

If one or the other malfunctions, you will need to get the entire Kit.
The Kits comes with both senders. The senders are pre-wired from the factory
with new wires.
Mercruiser did this because bad wires were the leading cause for switch failure.

And you'll need the hinge pin removal tool to pull the hinge pins so you can gain access to the bolt that retains the wire retainer in the transom plate.

There is no need to remove the u-joint bellows or the exhaust bellows, just drop the gimbal ring down.

The boat is a 1996. When did the Alpha I go to Gen II? If Gen II the steps are different, see the link above.
