Was curious about running up the Hudson in the fall.... Places to stay, looking at the leaves changing... Really want somewhere to stay where take a uber to town or prefer walk to town... And have a few shops and restaurants. Maybe stay for a long weekend. I hear haverstraw marina is nice and i hear kingston town is nice too.. Would love to just hear what everyone thinks or where they stayed??

im in haverstraw, the marina is nice, but there isn't too much locally. on the east shore in ossening, there is shattemuc yacht club. ive stayed there overnight on weekends sometimes. there is a nice waterfront restaurant in 5 minute walk, and the train station is right there and you get killer sunsets. when there, we have hopped on the train for one stop south to get off in tarrytown and walk around. tarrytown is the shops / galleries / restaurant area you are looking for. ive yet to go all the way north past Kingston , stayed there overnight a number of years ago. seems like its pretty much an overnight spot. there is some ,nice historic area with shops etc and the Hudson river museum which is worth checking out , but nothing more past the town unless you drive a ways into the mountains. I recently came back by train from Albany down the Hudson and noticed so many small marinas and yachtclubs that look very quaint and friendly. would llike to make it up that way again.

Newburgh waterfront is a nice place to stay for restaurant/bar night life, no shops there. Kingston is 30 miles North of Newburgh and a nice place to go for an overnight visit. Call ahead and make arrangement for a slip at the town dock www.kingstoncitymarina.com Kingston has a historic maritime museum, 4 or 5 restaurants and a few small shops. The fall trip up the river is spectacular and well worth the time and fuel.

Any recommendations further north up around the Troy or Albany area? Our son is starting school at RPI in Troy next month and it would be kind of nice to take a fall cruise up that way.

BTW: Kingston is a great place to stay for the night.

The Wife and I were talking pretty much the same trip,I think we'd be leaving the same area as well, so I'd love to hear your story when you get back.

Are there any transient friendly Marinas in the vicinity of West Point for an overnight stay?

I'm at twinlights marina in the highlands, what about you? Yeah i'm not sure of our plan yet either, boat's out of the water at another marina getting some work done anyway, but I'll let's see what shakes out.

That marina is really nice, they were booked when I was looking around. Though I really like the one I'm at since it's small and family like.

Anyway for sure let's keep in touch and maybe grab a drink sometime. I work from home or the boat so I'm always around.

Garrison Boat club is directly across from West Point they maybe able to fit you .Cold Spring Yacht club is about 1 mile north of WP(call ahead as they were rebuilding last year). Cornwall Yatch is about 3 miles north of WP across from Bannermans (Popell) island. Tip do not approach island from south or west. When heading up thru Havastraw bay you have plenty of water to take a straight course north. Also note the tide direction .Havastraw bay fills and empties on the eastern side like a question mark. If I can offer any other advise , hit me up

Thank you! Have passed it by boat a few times but would really like to stop and check it out when we make the trip this year.

Made the run up here to Kingston early yesterday morning for a weekend stay.
Leaves haven’t changed yet, but what a beautiful ride.!
Left my dock at dawn, Ocean was great, New York Harbor was busy with ferries as is typical for a Friday morning at around rush hour, but very little Hudson River traffic all the way up to Kingston. Bit of a chop on the river with winds out of the Northeast, but still a beautiful ride.
