Boat Info
We purchased a Sundancer Searay 220DA , with compass, gps and fish finder
Engines
a Mercruiser 350 with a 260hp leg.. single engine inboard.outboard
:smt013 Here is my dwelling Story of the day... We just made a purchased after saving for about a year of a used 1989 Sundancer 220DA sea Ray beauty... When I first seen this beautiful boat I taught It was a angel coming down from heaven driving in the ocean of clouds this boat (the romantic and sarcastic in me is making me say this things about my beloved boat) We used it the rest of the summer because we taught it was in good shape, the leg have just been redone about 50 hrs or so in it , the merc engine was running perfectly without any hitch or a problem.. This whole summer we basically spend it fishing or sightseeing up our beautiful inlets in Vancouver BC.... now the time to winterize came along.. figuring having such a beauty of a boat we had to do it properly because we didn't wanted any surprises... the time came to pick it up and we came with the surprise that the transom was completely rotten away... only been held by the damn fiberglass... desperate and out of options I called the closest place possible that could do the job and now i'm getting quoted between 8 to 10 k..... Don't know what to do... don't think i could resell with such a horrible problem.. i'm at wits end.... shame on me for not checking the hull of the boat... I don't know how to ask for help or any option that i could get? or if anyone have done anything like this?? Taking this guy to small claims might be the answer but then again I love this boat.... I wish I could post pics so u guys could see it... this might sound for a cry for help but its as well a cry for anyone that might of had to change the transom and how much it cost them....

You could not have used it with the drive being held on by the fiberglass only. You would have ripped the drive off the boat .
Not having it properly inspected is now a headache. How was it determined it was completely rotted?

First off - Welcome to CSR. The best site on the internet for all things Sea Ray!

I don't know how things work up in Vancouver, but I don't think small claims court is an option. I'm guessing you did not have the boat surveyed and therefore bought it "as is." I believe there has been a thread or two here on CSR detailing transom repair, so you can search for that. You may also gain some insight into the job by searching You Tube videos.

Sorry for your troubles. Good luck with the repairs.

Sorry to hear about this - I know how disheartening it can be.

I agree with the Doc - I would want a better explanation as to what is wrong. I would get a second, and maybe third opinion on this before committing to ANY work being done. If it's as bad as you think then that repair figure, unfortunately, is probably about right (although I think it is on the high side - but that could be them just covering their butt). The entire engine and drive assembly, both in and out, needs to come out. Along with any and all hardware, mechanicals and such attached to, or near, the transom. The fiberglass needs to be peeled off (preferably the inside only), wood removed and new wood glassed in. Repeat the above steps in reverse. It's very time consuming. As second or third opinion is pretty much a prerequisite. But don't base your decision strictly on cost.

PM me and I will send you a couple of Vancouver marine mechanic specialists to call and may be able to give you an opinion.

Also give you tube channel Friscojerrets a look see. What he did to his transom is pretty darn good. Good luck, JC

I want to thank everyone for their quick response, what I did today after work was to climb the boat and open the engine hatch and try to take pictures since to the plain eye nothing seems rotten or soft but after taking pics i notice a couple things that were cracked ... so ill try to post some pics and see what happens ....

take a small hammer and tap the outside of the transom. your looking for a dull sound when hit with a hammer.

I hope this pictures were helpful..now with the weather changing I don't known how far I could go

It's going to be darn near impossible, if not completely impossible, to diagnose the extent of rot via pictures. We can ooh and awe over them, but this is something that really needs to be touched and felt. Best thing is to get a few different estimates, and ask for references.
