I recently joined a local yacht club and I am very disappointed.
I knew when I joined the club that the social aspect of the club existed but I didn't expect the amount of excessive drinking and the lack of emphasis on boating that I have encountered.
I joined the club to find other like minded boaters but instead I have found a bunch of apathetic drunks.
Also I find it very disrespectful that the officers of the club wear the military style "whites" at formal functions.
Who the hell do these people think they are?
This is not a military organization nor does this club adhere to any military style function or discipline.
Just a bunch of drunk wana be's, how embarrassing.

No offense, but I'm having a hard time understanding why someone would join a club without checking it out beforehand.

Good point but with the limited amount of access to a private club prior to joining it is difficult to understand all the dynamics of the inner workings of the organization.
But I guess it is live and learn.

Um, leave and go somewhere where people don't drink? There are a number of marine/boating organizations that use these types of uniforms so that is not an uncommon thing.

There was a thread similar to this a while back. I think the best advice given was just to move on if you don't like the environment, regardless of the reason.

Good Luck with your situation.

Well finding an organization related to boating that doesn't have a drinking problem is virtually impossible. But I recon you know that already.
As far as the uniforms go I find this somewhat disrespectful towards our real sailors and soldiers. (Wanabe's)
But yes I will move on as I have found a couple marinas that have great facilities and you get what you pay for.
