Unfortunate that a CSR member is so Clueless!

Just like the deer crossing signs, why don't they cross on roads that are not heavily traveled!

Now, the only two times I like to wake people is when the jet ski jumpers needs a big wake and do acrobatic moves behind me. I keep it to when I have kids on the boat as they get a kick out of it. The other is when there is a sailing club ON A RIVER that has races and take up the entire width of the river. I tend to smile as I maneuver around them at about 1800 RPM. Blow boats do not belong on a river, especially racing!

Yeah I live and boat right on the ICW in NC. There are lots of marinas right on the ICW and I'm always sure to be mindful of others. I sure as hell don't want a 60 foot yacht driving by at full throttle past my boat when I'm docked! I give the same courtesy to others. Also, as evidence of this thread, people can get your hull numbers and report you for damages. Ultimately, I am responsible for my wake. I won't berate others in this thread, just stating what I'm thinking.

I could tell all the stories I've had, from the idiots with the blinding spotlights at night who won't turn them off, to the idiots driving without navigation or the stern light on (almost ran over somebody once because of that), to people anchored in the MIDDLE of the waterway AT NIGHT, the list goes on and on. Sometimes it amazes me that I come back unscathed, knock on wood.

Put it on the floor and stomp on it! That was for Toy yoT...he hates all products Apple!

My giving the gift of wake story was following a couple of fellow CSR members through the narrow Barnegat Bay channel near low tide. First time there for me. We were on plane when suddenly a 12ft sailboat emerged, previously hidden behind the boat in front of me.

He was 100 feet away, tops, and crossing the channel between two power boats going 25knots. Because hell, he's under sail and anyone else can just get out of his way.

There was no time to stop. I jumped out of the channel to go around the ....... Luckily just churned mud, no rocks. I failed to swamp him, barely.

As I got back in the channel he gave me the finger despite risking my family and boat to keep him alive. Because I was obviously in the wrong for failing to yield to a sailboat. He was completely clueless about the trumping requirements to operate in a safe manner or not interfere with a larger vessel with limited maneuverability operating in a narrow channel.

This one generates questions? Why didn't you see the ragboat sooner as he approached to cross the channel, it doesn't sound as if he could have been blocked by the boat ahead of you all the time:huh: When the boat ahead of you passed the ragboat you say there he was, 100' away, perhaps you were following too close...especially considering it was a 'first time' through the 'narrow' channel. Maybe 25 knots wasn't a prudent speed for you. I know how those sailboats are, but he was the least maneuverable vessel...it's you the responsibility ultimately falls on...like it or not.

I suppose it could be debated but it doesn't seem 'oooh, that guys wake is so big I might spill my beer' would be a legit reason to be firing off flare guns at other boats.

The Guest Dock, or Attenuator, at Willow Berm Marina is a notoriously crappy spot to stay, especially on the outside. The river is pretty wide there and boats go by all the time on plane or with wake because they think they are far enough away. They aren't. But the situation will never change unless someone plants some old mines or submarine nets or something. Because of this situation I simply refuse to stay at that marina. I stayed once and had the most miserable day and night ever. Ken, most of your club members know this and I'm surprised you guys would even stay there.

Don't get me wrong, in no way am I condoning the inconsiderate knuckleheads that do not slow there but the fact is, the situation exists and will continue to exist until one of the local water cop agencies take ownership.

My advice....just stay away. SRCNC has many other choices for cruises.

We get that and understand that the boats will have some wakes rocking us around, that's a given. We do not normally see vessels over 35' running by on plane. BTW, I always insist on staying on the inside...

Rag boats under sail are kind of like bees. They can dart in and out quickly at low speeds. I have been coming toward boats that have given signs of port passing then at the last minute the sail swings over and I'm passed on Starboard. No warning just a change in wind.

I try to stay clear of all sails but there is only so much room in a channel.

On the same point of steering clear,
A large site seeing boat on the Wisconsin river passed our can boat we rented for the weekend leaving a 3 foot wake. A buddy of mine was piloting and as the 3 footer comes to us he cuts the throttle and the bow does a nose dive. Yes he center punched the stupid thing and 6 inches of water wiped the can boat deck clean.
That was the last time his wife let him get behind the wheel the rest of the weekend. :smt021

How about 1-2 $79.00 fenders blown out ??? And no authorities doing crap what's your answer to that?? Some of you guys have all the answers as to why I'm wrong. Plus the fact my way works just fine

I think we are drawing our own conclusions because your information about the events are so vague. Your first post is a general I do this to all malefactors. Your second is in defense against a rebuttal from your get them all stance in your first post and now you add details we were not aware of in either posts.

Please help us understand your position by giving us all the story. I'm not trying to rail on you just trying to understand your position.
You apparently want us to validate your action or you would not keep defending it.

Mike, what do you think our motivation is to post? For me, it's only to get you to see from an objective perspective I don't think a jury of your peers will side with you.

We are telling you, in our opinion, that you should rethink your choice. Why? Because the news is full of stories like this where things escalate to a point that could turn deadly. If there is one thing you learn from those stories is how quickly life can be changed forever and we don't want you to live a life of regret.

To answer your question regarding the fenders, if you buy Taylor Made, I think they will replace them for free at West Marine. Otherwise you can try and track down the boater and get him to pay. You might want to invest in a larger fender at your dock. I use a Polyform F11 and it works great. I just leave it at the dock. You're not going to blow that out.

BTW- I get rocked all the time and I've never thought of escalating the situation. It's an exercise in personalities... I guarantee that person isn't waking you intentionally.... Relax, we are all boaters here... I'd say 95% of the boaters I've met are pretty laid back... the other 5% I avoid.... They haven't learned what life is about. They haven't learned that their problems aren't problems at all....

Aloha

Unrelated, but a positive WM experience. They did replace 2 TaylorMade fenders for me that leaked air, and 1 that was burst. No questions asked.

I know that they do replace them. That would not be my issue with the fish boats. What are they going to destroy next? Besides we are in a manatee zone. You would think that FL fish a Game would care. they don't! We also have the CG 3 blocks from us.

How many times do I call on deaf ears???

I have run out of popcorn.

We all have things on the water that bug us. My pet peeve are the blow boaters that blow up and down our home channel under full sail with no way to stop if something happens. Or when they have their kiddy classes right in front of the mouth of the channel making us dodge the little blow boat ba$tard$ running amuck because they don't have a clue.

As someone posted above, I don't own the water. Fishing boats, blow boats and any other legal craft have as much right to be there as I do. I like to fish, would I park in the middle of a busy channel, No. Do I have the right to if I so desire, yes I do. So as much as these things are annoying we need to live with them, and deal with them in a legal manner. So if the other water craft is annoying but acting legally I do what is proper per the rules of the water and move on.

Now, if the other water craft is breaking the law, waking, not giving proper way, I report. I get boat names, etc. However, I will not jeopardize my boat, family or personal freedom to get even or cause harm. Again as another posted, if I know a certain place is dangerous for my people or my boat, I simply stay away.

I am going to go get some more popcorn.

I tried and they asked for a receipt. Of course I did not have one with me... no Luck, not even Andrew!
