unconnected black wire on engine 4 inches below electric box above left exhaust riser

I have a 1997 5.7 EFI throttle bottle injected engine on a 240 Sundancer. Working on a suspected bad electric fuel pump, and found a black wire (with metal loop on end) coming out of the harness about 4 inches below the back of the electric box above the left exhaust riser. It is the box with computer (old version, maybe called ecm or similar), fuses and relays for fuel pump, etc. The wire isn't hooked up to anything. I'm assuming it is a ground. Anyone know what it is and where it grounds to? Or could it be an extra wire that isn't used. Thanks, Rich

I should have included it is an alpha gen II outdrive. thanks, Rich
