Umbrella for cockpit

What diameter poles did you use - was originally thinking 1" with a 7/8" extendable section with spring clips?

This sounds about right. The poles do upsize a 3rd time to fit snug in the rod holders. I bought the setup second hand so not exactly sure on the diameters. Going with rod holders is the right way to go. I installed CE Marine rod holders with backing plates. Took some contorting to install.

GCHOG: I originally used adjustable "oh-shit" poles, and the wind bent them in half, two of them!

Creekwood: Your setup looks to be spot on! Does your boat neighbor have the same thing? Where did you get the poles? And the canvas customized to fit?

saopm: Was that sunfly setup made to order for your specific boat?

My boat neighbour (with a 560DB) had the stainless steel poles made by a canvas shop with a simple loop at the top. Then he used a simple square pool fly as the shade. The boat end is just attached at the corners to the back of the cockpit cover with plastic clips. THe fabric just sits over the top of the rear Bimini. Rope used to tie and snug the back to the poles. Worked great.

Mine is similar but low tech. I bought an outdoor fly in triangle shape from Home Depot. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Coolaro...Triangle-Shade-Sail-with-Kit-473914/205415807 The material is the same as my buddies, but I don't know where he got his. Both match the sea ray tweed beige nicely. Other colours are available.

It gets laid over top of the rear Bimini and tied to the hand rails near the arch. The back end point is attached to an extendable pole with a rubber foot . The top of the pole is tied with a rope down to the swim platform. It sounds like it might be unstable, but it is very stable. On my sundancer I went with a triangle to make it only partial shade while at anchor.
