I was looking at sedan bridges but they are too intimidatingly big for me to be comfortable driving so we are going to get a more manageable 320 sundancer which will be a great fit. I see one (2006) that has a v drive, is that good or bad? what other kinds of drives are there on these boats and which is best. Any years better than others? Also, any additional tips would be very appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help.

Friends of mine had V drives in their 2001 310 DA with big blocks. They loved it and a couple of years ago moved to the 400SD. Never heard anything derogatory about the engines or drives for that the size Dancer.

yes - you want shafts - v drive just means the motor is placed further back than it would in a normal installation (necessary to keep the aft cabin in a dancer) you do NOT want stern drives (also called I/O) One piece of advice you didnt ask for - get an '03.5-'08 340 - one of the best boats sea ray ever made - it addresses every shortcoming of the 320 incuding: underpowered; tight bilge/engine room making maintenence difficult; too short of a berth; etc..... good luck with your search

so on that boat you'll see v-drive options and bravo 3 outdrive options. The outdrives will be more efficient but come with greater maintenance requirements. If you're in saltwater, you'll probably want the v-drives. Fresh water, it will make less of a difference. It kind of depends what tradeoffs your willing to make.

Where do you boat, and where do you plan on keeping the boat? If you boat in salt water, and want to store it in salt water, v-drive. If you are boating in fresh water, then IO is fine, and you, or your mechanic, will have much more room to work on the engines and other equipment in the bilge. If you boat in salt, and store the boat out if the water, I would still recommend V-Drives, but you could get away with IO drives, a bit more maintenance, but lots of room to work.
Here is a pic of the engine room, v-drives, engines are reversed, moved towards the front of the boat, and generator sits all the way behind the 2 engines by the transom.

Here is a pic of stern drive/IO engines, the are all the way in the back mounted to the transom, and you can sit in front of them and have dinner.
