TIERRA VERDE - Rescuers are looking for two people lost in the waters off Egmont Key.

One person has been rescued, but he reported that two more people from his boat were still in the water.

The search is being conducted by the Coast Guard using their boats and helicopter.

*** I will post more info as it becomes available ***

I went out there with a rental boat back in April. I didn't have any problems. Is this a tough place sometimes?

I don't know, I've never been but that's where Aquapalooza is this sunday.

I really hate hearing this stuff. cause depending on tide these guys could be way out into the gulf and will never be heard from agian.

I wonder what kind of boat they where in. i'm always hearing about small craft taking a wave or two over the bow and down they go.

seems to happen around that area quite a bit. usually, jon boat types thinking they are inland because they are near an island. however, the ship's channel runs through there, you are at the mouth to the gulf, and for all practical purposes, should be considered open water.

that, or someone tips the boat over, and no one has life jackets.

always sad, regardless of the cause.

the guys were dumb.. how you gonna go out in a 17' freshwater bass boat 5 miles away from land in the mouth of tampa bay in the egmont channel where the gulf of mexico and the bay meets? well then again maybee they drifted there.. but still a bass boat that is made for a lake, or shallows, its not made to take on any kind of waves.. i just saw it on the news like 2 mins ago and was gonna post it but someone els did before me..

hey tphinny i added a pic of this madness..

The bay is over 35+ miles long and over 10 miles wide at the widest point. It's also very shallow with an average depth of 9 to 15 feet deep. becuase of this even a little wind can cause it to get rough fairly quickly.

to give you an example in my 240DA I have taken waves over the front which have sent better than 50+ gallons of water flying straight into my face and my 240 has a fairly hig freeboard and a somewaht deep v.

you have to keep a close watch on the weather especially in the summer time as super cells will form up along the coastline and get the winds going up over 25 knots and sometimes as high as 40+. this will brew 6 footers in the bay in no time and much higher wave out in the gulf.

it's not a place to be caught in a small open bow boat once this takes place. i used to run the bay in my 220SD with the bow cover on at times when I was alone to help shed some of the bow spray off the boat and not into the boat.

even now if its a little rough and i'm out solo. I always wear my fanny pack infatble PDF. better to look like a geek and be alive than to be cool and dead.

I'm always amazed at how many small and I mean real small boats I see out their when the weather is just a little to rough for them. If I see one headed my way and especially if I see kids on board I'lll signal them to drop into my wake and have them let me break the waves for them. sometimes I get takers, sometimes they think they know better.

Here is the updated story and a link to Fox 13 for some pictures and video of it.

TIERRA VERDE - A search of the waters off Egmont Key turned up two missing boaters late this morning.

Rescuers had been looking for the two after a third person had been rescued. He reported that the two other people from his boat were still in the water after the boat capsized yesterday.

However, the view from SkyFox showed a 17-foot aluminum boat bobbing about five miles off the coast, anchored with no obvious problems.

It was just before noon when the Coast Guard hauled the two boaters -- a man and a woman -- aboard, then transferred them to a St. Pete Fire Rescue boat.

By 12:30, the pair had arrived back at the Bay Pier of Fort DeSoto, where medics were waiting to check them over.

I don't get how it looks like the boat is fine looks even anchored but yet they were in the water.

engin stopped working. they werent in the water.. there are 2 in the boat in the picture but the third that was there jumped in the gulf to swim for help and was found drifting and picked up.. described the boat he was stuck on and they later found the other 2 on the stranded boat. they anchored and luckly its not a day with alot of waves. its probably not no more than 10 feet there anyway depending where they were exactly.. around egmont key there are alot of shallow spots..

Oh No cr0ck;

they where idiots. a 17ft john boat 5 miles offshore is plain stupid. not to mention that the boat appears to be anchored.

I only wish that the Coast Guard would bill responsible parties when Rescue Operations involve complete stupidity like this. or maybe issue a fine when using a boat that is rated for lakes and protected waters in open water situations.

I love and respect the Coasties for what they do as they pulled my old man from the atlantic after near 6 hours in the water when the Sailing Vessel Alexandria went down off the coast of the Carolinas, but for incidents like this where some redneck wanted to go Tarpon Fishing on his john boat man that just pisses me off that this guy will probably not even see a fine or punishement for wreckless endangerment of his passengers.

well im glad someone agrees with me. usually i make a comment and someone crys about what i said.. lol.. again those guys were dumb.

Is it a known fact that one of them SWAM for help? WHAT! So, not only do they take this boat out 5 miles, they have no radio or cell phone? Or flares or whistle or anything? I bet they had plenty of beer which must explain the swimming. They are very lucky. Let's hope they learned their lesson.

well in the news the caster said that "the reason the guy jumped out is because when you are on the water at night looking at the lights on land you think its way closer then it really is" and YES they found one guy floating in the water 2 miles from the boat.

crock,
do you have a different story link than above? there was no audio in that video.

the written article says the 2 were pulled from the water?

I watched the actuall news broadcast as i was sitting in my bed studying for my biz licence test. i saw the footage and heard what they said.. im pretty sure that they said they first found a man floating holding on to (some floating debris) then he said he was in a boat that got stuck and he jumped out and swam for help.. they later found his described boat at the location.. there wre 3 people in all on the boat.. in the picture i posted there are 2 people on the boat! and ones missing! thats the one they origionally picked up and the other 2 were still on the boat.

Oh, I see them in your picture now. The video on fox link shows them on a bigger boat and the coast guard drives what looks like a miles to get to the bass boat.

Okay, now that that is clarified get back to work so you can upgrade your boat!

There was no audio because it was a copy of the live feed from the Fox 13 helicopter. They do that alot but get some nice footgage that they normally cut up and only show you a piece of it in the news cast.
