My long term plan is to replace both 454 7.4L 340hp engines with a similar engine, except the new engine is rated to be 420hp.
If I had the money for both engines, I would replace them at the same time. However, I only have money to replace one at this time, with plans on replacing the other in 2 months.

My question is this..will it be a problem to have one newer, higher rated hp and an older (functioning) engine? I don't plan on going out for long cruises, but wanted everyone's opinion.

I had one engine fail (fuel pump) in rough water. I ran the boat for 10 miles at 2500 RPM on one engine. Did not seem to damage the transmission or stuffing box. So I guess you could run on one engine. If I were you I would wait until I could do both at the same time.

+1. Keep building your piggy bank until you can do both at the same time. Saves time, saves money and both engines will have the same start date and start hours will be the same (or close) for the time they're in the boat.
