Tropical Storm Ian Prediction as of 0200 EDT.

Catching up with some images to share. Shrimp fleet at Ft. Meyers Bch, Legacy Harbor Ft. Meyers, Tarpon Point, and my boat in St. Charles Yacht Club Ft Meyers. Miracle hurricane hole.View attachment 134724 View attachment 134725 View attachment 134726 View attachment 134727

My father is a past commodore of St Charles YC. It's amazing how little damage they had.

We are supposed to take a sailing course out of Tarpon Point in January, guessing that won't happen.

My parents learned last night that thier house is standing on Sanibel but had water to just below the front door. Their roof mates (it's a duplex) kids live on island and rode out the storm. Yesterday they were picked up by boat at the parents house.

Best of luck hope all goes well and stay safe.

All is OK at my marina, I checked The Office and several others for dock friends. Other than a lost fender and stretched lines (new ones) all is good. It will be hitting Charleston soon.

Having grown up on the east coast down there and weathering them, I fully understand the impact and pray for those affected.

Just got lucky this time, twice in the past I was not.

I just wonder how many of the folks that lost their boats or had even major but repairable damage will replace their boat or deal with getting it repaired. They will need to move the boat to a yard probably 50 miles away just to find one still standing first. Then there is the wait list, it goes on and on. I would guess most will just move on to another pastime. Then what does an event of this magnitude do to the market for boats in general? Several hundred of the lost boats were probably listed for sale?
Interesting but gut churning questions to ponder as I am finishing the negotiations and sale of my 506. Suddenly I am not in such a charitable mood to give concessions for survey findings.

I'll probably need a new motor

I wonder if most of these hulls end up in a landfill after the scrap metals are salvaged?
My 2 cents. First, getting a damaged boat from point a to b a supreme challenge whether a haul out yard or scrap yard. Hull damage without water intrusion is fixable. Hull damage with water intrusion depends on how much water relative to the engines. Even half sunk boats can be salvaged. I saw one, 85' a while back on the hard at a haul out place. It had sunk off Naples, FL. Ran aground I think. It was towed and stored at Gulf Marine in Ft. Meyers. Gulf Marine does the shrimp fleet, large tour & excursion boats, and yachts. This particular one was there quite a while and heard the owner was fighting with the insurance co. Don't know the result. Gulf Marine probably did what they could to preserve the engines from salt water but rest of systems, who knows. There are other haul out facilities in the area but damage and without power will severely hamper salvage when time is of the essence.

We got our power back on last night.

Were without power for 21.5 days after CAT 4 Charlie in 2004

I am AMAZED that it happened so fast.

A section of my next door neighbors lanai roof blew off the back of the house, flew 4 houses down the street, broke a concrete telephone pole and destroyed someone elses garage and roof

Phone service is coming back but spotty

No internet, but am using a hot spot from my phone to connect.

When we returned my 3 strand lines looked very limp, as compared to when I tied her up - I believe they stretched.

I used these lines for CAT 2 Irma in 2017 and several of them date back to CAT 4 Charlie in 2004.

After we recover I am thinking its best that I replace them before next season.

No insurance boat, house or motorcycle I just suck it up, Some call it self insured. Who would expect a cat 4 direct hit?
Looks like you fared pretty well considering all. Is that a high-water mark on the lawn in your pic?

Yes I consider myself lucky. Yes high water mark. I should have strapped the boat to the bunks, had it up all the way and thought that would be good enough.

Gulf Marine, a haul out & repair facility for yachts on the bayou next to the wrecked shrimp boat fleet. Can handle very large vessels. Had my Sea Ray 450 there last year for bottom job. Image shows boats "on the hard" tossed off their support, some across the street.
