I'm going to be making a trip from the mouth of the Appomattox/James river to Lynnhaven, VA Beach this Sunday, and I was wondering if anyone has ever made that haul? I mapped it out online, and it's about 81 nautical miles to Lynnhaven from my Marina. At 25 knots, it would take me just over 3 hours without stopping and wake zones not accounted for in that estimate.

Does anyone feel that is a fairly accurate estimate? I'm not sure how slow or crazy it will be down towards Hampton, etc. I'm going just for the night.. and I'm trying to figure out if it's going to be worth going all that way just for a night.

Here is the site I used for my estimate: http://www.boatbookings.com/yachting_content/map_distances.php

Thoughts anyone? Greatly appreciated!

I am not sure about the distance, but it sounds close. Where are you docking for the night at Lynnhaven? Just be sure to stay in the channel entering Lynnhaven Inlet. Take a turn to port as soon as you pass under the Lynnhaven ( Lesner ) bridge. Some very nice restaurants in the area within walking distance.

Jay, it took me about that long to go from Rocketts Landing to Jamestown. I would think that would be a close estimate. I don't know your fuel plan but I will give you prices at Jamestown, $4 per. Kingsmill is higher. Deep Creek is a nice place to stop for lunch and fuel, the entrance is tricky. If your gonna stop at Jamestown I will be there both Sat and Sunday in the afternoon

It takes me 3 hours from Chester to Hampton.

3-4 hours depending on wind and tide. Leave with the outgoing tide and you will pick up several knots and save a TON of fuel. While there are places you can cut the channel, I would advise HEAVILY against it and would stay dead in center if possible. There are crab pots every place especially around the junction of the James and the Chick. Not all of them are outside the channel as required by law. Many pot markers are the same color as the water or black. Parallel to the channel there is a trot line that has to be a hundred yards long if it is a foot. It is running right along the north edge of the channel in the James about where the Chick and James intersect. If you decide to fuel en-route, Kingsmill is comparable to the rest of the area.

Be safe out there.

EDIT ADD: Don't forget it's going to take you 30 to 40 minutes to get from the slip to the James.
