trim position sender/gage

hi everybody
I have a 1985 SeaRay Seville 3.0 mercruiser. I recently replaced the trim senders and bellows. My boat didnt have a trim gage from factory...that I know of....I figured I could just run the wires from the position sender to a trim gage. I doesnt work. The boat only has one trim solenoid (up,down and full up work) but there are two wires from the harness, a Brn/wht and a black that I assume are meant to attath to a solenoid. I'm very confused and cant stand when things dont work lol.
Any ideas? I would be eternally grateful!
