My trim up toggle on throttle stopped working, the down works and the trailer trim up works but not the regular up. Sometimes it sounds like its engaged but then cuts off, a short buzz , I can hear the pump kick on then not. Its a 97 Mercruiser IO B3 out drive. Could it be just something loose or bad connection?
Where would I start looking? trim limiting switches on out drive? I think there are two of those?

The trim limit switches are notoriously problematic. One is for the trim gage, and the other for trim limit (don't remember which side is which).

Thanks jim. I guess I'll check some documentation.

Here on page 2A-58 shows how to adjust the switches.

Well after spending about 3 hr on the trim issues, im at a loss. Has anyone ever taken the sender switch apart? I opened mine and it had some water incursion and was corroded. I cleaned it up very gingerly since there are little metal fingers that make the contacts on the white disc with metal sections on it. with the drive down, I proceded try every position the disk had, it inserts into the hinge pin for the drive and checked the gauge to see if it went to the down position. It stayed in the up position most of time, I did have it move to 3/4 up but the trim still didn't come up and then I never got it to go up again when I moved the disc one position.
Anyway, do they make new internals for the sender unit? it looks like you can replace the pieces inside, the metal section or painted on metal contacts on disc looks worn away and maybe isn't making contact.

Hmmmm. If you know the wire colors of the switch position in question, and you can trace the wires to a plug, try and jump it at the plug and see if it works. if it doesn't then the problem isn't the switch itself, but elsewhere, as possibly the limit switches going bad, or a connection at the pump itself. If what I posted even makes sense...

I got it! finally, I had to recruit my daughter to stay at the helm and work the switch, I must have walked up and down the ladder 50 times. It was a matter of slight adjustments to the limiting switch. Man what a load of my mind, I was about to buy a new set and pull the out drive.
Thanks for all the input.
