Trim gauge

My trim gauge seems to bounce and not give an accurate reading below half. Any thoughts????
I just bought the boat and not to familiar with it yet.

you could try to adjust the trim position sensor to see if that helps...the trim position sensor is the 'hockey puck' looking thing on the port side of the sterndrive....the adjustment procedure should be outlined in your owners manual or you can find them by a search of the forum or internet...if the adjustment does not work most likely the trim position sensor or the wiring is going bad which is a common problem....my boat did the same thing this past summer....eventually the gauge stopped working all together and the 'up' trim button on the throttle stopped working....i can still raise the trim using the 'trailer' button but i have to be careful not to raise the drive too far when using this method...replacement of the sensor is involved and time consuming...i have not done the job but from what i have read the drive has to be removed and the wires snaked through the transom...for now i am just living with a bad trim sensor...i can trim the boat by feel and by ear using the 'trailer' button...the 'down' trim button on the throttle still works OK....the next time i have a reason to remove the sterndrive i will likely replace the sensor then...

I have all ready bypass the trim switch so that both up and down work on the toggle. Its just that the indicator does not indicate smoothly when going down below half. I to can just tell by feel and sound just wondering if something simple.
