Transmission wow's

Fluid OK? There's much made of noisey transmissions on these boats. Some say it has to do with how well the engine is tuned, some say there is an acceptable level of noise. Has anyone looked at the running gear for something snagged (I had a bungee cord wrapped around a prop once).

Did you have the props checked?

when i bought my 1998 37 the port trans was making noise. This was during seatrial. The mechanic , a very knowledgeable sea ray mechanic said most of these v drive make that noise in reverse. It seems to be only the port trans. It almost feels like it comming in and out of gear. I have the boat now for 6 years the noise and vibration is still there. no better no worse. I think it is worse after a hard run, which emplies fluid vescosity. I changed to 32 wt hydraulic fluid and it went away completely for a season. I am now going to change the fluid again. If you throttle up to 1200 it will probably not vibrate. Please keep us informed as to what you do. there are many boats with 630 trans with this problem.

ok sounds like a different problem. I do not have any grinding at all. Here is what i would do . Suck out the fluid in a very clean container, strain the fluid through a few layers of clean white cotton. If any metal comes out test with a magnet. the case is aluminum, the clutches are fiber and bronze, the gears are steel. it's not going to solve your problem but it may tell you what is going on.

Did they do a prop shaft alignment, check that the prop shaft is true, and that the props are also true? Also did they check the condition of the cutlass bearing?

Small bends to running gear is not usually perceptible to the eye. Were the props sent to a reputable prop shop or just eyeballed? You hadn't mentioned that the manufacturer ruled out transmission problems so I think that can be taken off the list of possible causes, correct? It's got to be the alignment or cutless bearings, as Frank suggested, or damage to the running gear.

Engine running rough at low RPM - my guess.

Hans....I have no idea about your issues, but that is a sweet looking picture....your blue hull looks awesome!!!!

I was also thinking it's the running gear that's not visible unless you scan it in the shop. But, based on your latest post this boils down to only two components: engine and trainy. Sounds like the engine was tuned. How does it run at different RPMs without engaging the transmission? If it's clean at 1K, 1.5K, 2K, etc. then you have to switch the focus on the trainy regardless what they said from initial test. There's no magic, you disconnected everything else. If there's no vibration when the engine runs on it's own, then you have to move on to the next component in line, which is trainy (due to the fact that underwater gear is disconnected). Is there a chance they can give you a spare trainy just to test?
