Hi, Im new to the site and have a question. I have a 1986 Sea Ray 270 with a 454 engine, 330 Mercruiser TRS outdrive which has been replaced. The transmission slips out of gear @ 2200 rpm and then rev's. I can back off the throttle and try again and it will work. Does anyone know about this or has any manual on the engine and trans design. Thanks Chuck:smt100

Sounds like your shift linkage is out of adjustment. When it gets enough torque on the gears, you will slip out of gear if it is not all the way engaged.

Do you get a burnt rubber smell when this happens? It could be that you've spun the rubber hub in your prop. It can be replaced easily at a prop shop. It's fairly common when you attach a large engine to a prop.

are they Merc II, transmissions or Borg Warner?
if you find its not your hub and they are MercII transmissions, there is a good guy in Bellingham Washington who specializes in these transmissions. KC marine, Kirk...if they are BW's he is not, i dont think anyways. many transmissions have been pulled because of a slipped prop hub . thats why you need to be sure
MercII transmissions are the Kia's of transmissions and are not very durable, if they are Borgs then you are in good shape....first things first, check the hub and then move onto the tranmsissions and list if you can
