Transmission not engaging with new engine

Hello to All,
340 1983 454 Mercruiser Gen 4 mechanic replaced and he says transmission is not engaging at all....
After months of having the boat at his shop...
Any thoughts/ideas?
Excuse the basic question, does each engine has its own transmission?

Yes each engine will have its own transmission. Guessing those are v-drive inboards? Can he get engagement by directly moving the lever on the transmission? How’s the fluid?

Yes, V drive inboards, fluid is ok.
I am concerned mechanic is giving me the run around. The transmission was ok before engine swap. And is taking 4 months when he said engine swap and tune up of other engine going to be done in 1 week...

Tough call to take the boat now... i do not know what is worst...i need to be able to ask the mechanic a couple of questions to make him own the issue and fix it
