What type of fluid should I put in my transmission? I believe they are hurth. The fluid is red. Not sure if it is the same as ATF OR DEXTRON.

I would without any hesitation read your transmission paperwork if you got it in the portfolio of the boat. If you did not get it with the boat call Hurth give them the model number of your Trans and they will guide you accordingly. What is good for one transmission may not be good for another. Using the wrong fluid will shorten your Trans life, and be very, very expensive.

Bow Tie

While I agree with bow tie, dex III for a hurth is fine. I am guessing you have a ZF? The hurth manuals are readily available on line if you don't have one. They list all the fluids in the manual. Do yourself a favor and change the filters too. Hale marine has them for the lowest cost. They are reusable , so soak your old ones in mineral spirits and alternate when you change fluid.

Look at the mfg tag on the top rear center of the transmission....it clearly says what fluid to use. If it says ATF, then use Dexron III.

For the record, Hurth was acquired by ZF about 15 years ago. If you go to a website for info, be sure it is the ZF site.

Respectfully, Sir, you are incorrect.

ZF has published a list of acceptable lubricants for their (and Hurth) marine transmissions, publication # TE-ML-4:

https://www.zf.com/global/media/en_zf/lubricantslists/TE-ML_04.pdf

Most transmissions used in Sea Rays use lubricant type 4D, which is ATF. Others, mostly inboard non-v-drive transmissions require lubricant types 4A , 4B and 4C, which are lubricating oils. 4A & 4B specify SAE 30 or SAE 40. Only transmissions requiring 4C can use multi viscosity lube oil.

The reason is that some transmissions transmit engine power thru a clutch pack which engages via hydraulic pressure. Non-ATF will allow the clutches to slip and eventually wear out.

The original poster, Riptide III, who has Hurth HSW 800 transmissions, requires type 4D fluid which is a Dexron III type ATF. Your recommendation to use Amsoil 25W-40 synthetic oil is the wrong type of fluid and certainly the wrong viscosity.

Once again, the correct fluid is clearly labeled on the mfg.'s tag on the transmission, is cast in the lid on the filter cover and is shown on the dip stick tag if it is still on the transmission.
