We will be passing through the New York City area on our way up the Hudson In mid May. Thought maybe someone from that area might recommend a marina where we can stay for 1 or 2 nights. I found a few in the Hudson River/NY Harbor chart book, but advice from the locals sure would be nice. Thanks in advance

Liberty Landing is good. You can get a ferry to New York. It is also easy access to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.

Liberty Landing is good. Nice views of downtown, protected well, easy access to the city.

I will suggest where NOT to stay.....anywhere right on the river without the above mentioned protection. Otherwise you will rock, and I MEAN ROCK, from 5AM when the ferries start till 11PM when the ferries stop........been there done that, won't do it again.....ever!!!!!!

As

Chelsea Piers offers transient docking - around 24th St., might still be a Marine Max dealer involved with them too. It keeps you in the island side versus the NJ side if that's important at all to you and eliminates ferry rides.

I bought my 380DA from the (ss3) MM at Chelsea. One of the first projects I had with that boat was replacing the boot stripes....It's one of the 'bouncy' marinas.

These were my recommendations from a January 09 thread in this forum about trips from Albany to NYC. Your might want to check it out especially if your going on up the Hudson. http://clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14817

The only marina on the Manhattan side of the Hudson available to you is the 79 st Boat Basin (http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_thing...f/brochure.pdf). It's in a park and only a 4-5 block walk to Central Park; but is very rough, doesn't take reservations, and very shallow at low tide.
On the New Jersey side there are 3 that I've stayed in:
Liberty Landing (www.libertylandingmarina.com) In a park in the shadow of the statue. The only marina not affected by the wakes. Nice docks, fuel, but limited facilities in an old Light Ship. Somewhat isolated with only a restaurant (good food but a little pricey for my taste). Even the cabs seen to have a hard time finding it. A ferry can take you across the canal to Jersey City or across the Hudson to the financial district where I think there is a major hotel near the ferry terminal.
Newport Marina (www.newportnjmarina.com) Pretty rough depending on river traffic. Older docks and facilities. Fantastic view of Manhattan at night. 2 blocks to Path (subway) station that goes under the river to Manhattan. Shopping, restaurants, etc. Doubletree and Marriott within 4-6 blocks. Good cab availability.
Lincoln Harbor (www.lincolnharbormarina.com) Slight chop but not real bad. Good facilities and docks. In Weehawken with shopping and restaurants nearby. Sheraton & Marriott nearby. Ferry into Manhattan and fair cab availability.

don't forget liberty harbour just across from liberty landing. it less expensive, very very protected and deep on any tide and has light rail acess to everywhere.

If I'm not mistaken, the water taxi does stop on that side of inlet to pick up passengers. The Sandbar restaurant/night club is on that side as well. So it's not a bad option. Just an FYI though.. some of the patrons that visit the Sandbar are not your typical boating crowd. Jersey City has a very diverse culture.

you are right the water taxi does not stop on that side but the light rail is a 1 min walk, i thank you for your kind comment that jersey city has a "diverse" crowd for i am born, bread and work in JC... I also probably will be burried, i have reservations.

I believe the Liberty Harbor Water Taxi DOES stop on that side, which allows access to NYC. Google the website and call for confirmation.

BTW... I grew up in Bayonne and my wife grew up in Jersey City. I still have lots of friends in both "diverse" neighborhoods, one of whom is a part time captain on the water taxi pictured above.

Thanks to all for the great info. I've contacted Liberty Landing and really appreciate the scoop on the cheap gas. I probably would have just fueled at liberty landing if not for that. Thanks Rick for the link to the earlier threads posted in january, good stuff there too!
