I ordered a transducer for my Garmin 498 on Flea Bay. When it arrived I opened the box and started to read the instructions. Instead of drilling a hole through the hull this transucer shoots a beam through the hull from inside the bilge. Has anyone used one of these? Are they any good. The instructions suggest that if your hull has wood or foam in it you have to drill 1/3 way through and then install it. What is my hull? 92 sundancer.

They work just fine IF installed in the right spot! I'd guess the bottom of your bilge has some square spots that have some glass over wood. They are strong spots designed for a through hull. I'd start with it over one of those spots to see how well it works. You can put it in a plastic bag and use a rubber band or something to keep the water in while you move it looking for a good spot. Once you find one, temporarily secure it and then take the boat for a run to make sure the signal isn't lost by air from a strake or other through hull. If it works, epoxy it in place and your all set.
