I am currently working on restoring the trailer for my 24' SRV-240 and I am wondering what parts I should consider for replacing certain items on the trailer. Most of the data on these items has rusted away or the stickers have pealed off, so I have no idea what they are rated at. First, I need a new trailor winch seeing as the one that came on the trailer is covered in rust and has seen better days. I am wondering which winch weight I should buy? I know the winch never carries the entire weight of the boat but what is a safe amount for a boat my size? Second, I need a new trailor jack because the pin broke on the factory jack. What weight jack will my trailer need? I am also replacing the braking hitch and cylinder for the trailer. What pound braking will I need for my boat and trailer?

I believe the boat itself weights around 4,400 lbs but I am not sure what the trailer weighs. With the trailer in the shape it is in I wouldn't feel safe driving it to any scales to find out. What would be a safe bet for these items?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give,
Robert

We will need a much more detailed description or pictures. As a rule, if you spend anywhere near 50% of a new aluminum trailer to rehab an old one, buy a new one and send the old one to scrap metal.

Most of the trailer is in good shape, the only problem area as far as rust goes is the bar that holds the pulpit and hitch has some rust on it. I have a buddy that is an pro welder and he has gone over the trailer and offered to weld in that whole section of the trailer as long as I buy the metal and new trailer parts. I am also replacing all the leaf spring hardware. $3,500 for a new trailer is not in my budget unfortunately LOL.

Thank you for your responses so far,

while most of the folks on this forum (including me) are more than willing to offer advise on things like this i would think based on the scope of your project you would be better off talking to trailer experts such as 'eastern marine' or 'e-trailers'.....if you call their tech support and tell them the weight and length of your boat as well as some info on your trailer they will be able to advise you of the parts required and the cost....you would likely reduce the shipping cost as well by ordering all of the parts at the same time from the same company....

good luck....

The good news is it looks like a c-channel instead of tube frame so you can actually see all the metal. We had a member with a good looking trailer that the tongue just rusted off from the inside.

4400lb is approx dry weight
add 1500 for gas and gear
mine scaled 7200lb on the trailer with a full tank and all gear
