I'll be picking up my new trailer in a week or so and I was wondering about a trailer brake controller for the truck. My trailer weighs 2275lbs with 12" electrics x 6. I have an '04 F150 which I will use to get the trailer from Port Clinton Ohio to Cincinnati (250 miles max, flat midwestern interstate) I do not intend to use this truck to tow the boat on the trailer since the combined weight far exceeds the trucks ability but I do plan to fetch the empty trailer with it. I was wondering if I need to get an electric brake controller added to the F150 to tow the trailer only? I realize that the brakes will not operate without the controller and I do have the 7-pin connection for the lights since this will be a one time move is it worth it? I just want to move the trailer safely this one time with my vehicle, from there on out it will be done with a properly equiped F350 (unavailable for this move).. Thoughts???

Your truck should tow the empty trailer fine. The brake controller would be preferable, but remember to use a very low setting or the tires will skid.

I know the absolute "safest" would be to put in the box....but the f150 will do fine with just the trailer without brakes.

Your F150 is more than capable towing that trailer without electric brakes. Your F150 could tow 3 of those trailers without issue.

I've towed my trailer emty with my Dakota with no problems. Although my trailer has surge brakes. I don't think you will have any troubles at all pulling the trailer but I would leave plenty of braking room just in case. In a quick stopping situation the trailer may push the truck a bit...

Yeah pulling is not the concern, I just don't want to get passed at an intersection by my shinny new trailer:lol:

Thanks for the input, now just waiting for Loadmaster to call:smt038
