Wanted to see what everyones opinion was. I have a 2015 ram 2500 Gas 6.4HEMI. Storage is 2.5 miles from ramp. Would it be a pain in the butt to tow and drop/pull the boat each time? My current experience is only with the smaller 240da which I currently own. Would I be ok weight wise to tow with my truck?

Thank

You'd have to add up the weights and compare to manufacturers published towing capacity for your exact truck model. As always besides the boat, make sure you count weight of trailer, full fuel and gear.

without knowing the exact weights its hard to say if it is legal but that truck should have no problems pulling that boat. a guy at our marina has a 2015 310 and pulls it with a newer (2015 maybe) chevy 2500 6.0 and said it pulls it fine.

I don't know the towing capacity of your truck but i am sure your specs are easy to find. I trailed my 290 quite abit. I estimated it was was roughly 13,000lbs with a steel trailer. Not sure i would want to tow that with a gas engine but a few miles may not be that bad.

Would love to check out you 290. This is the boat I want next. I am also from Cincinnati and heading to Cumberland on Friday morning. We keep the boat at alligator 2. Do you keep it In a slip at conley? If so do you mind me asking what the bat slip runs for a boat that size?

Thanks

Make sure you've got 4.10 gears. I wouldn't do it with the 3.73s. At that load, I'd also want electric over hydraulic brakes as well.

You're only talking about 2.5 miles, right? I guess I don't see what your question is.

Take it slow, don't try any jackrabbit starts and remember it takes longer to stop with the boat behind you, but I'd go for it.

A friend of mine with an old 70's Chebby 1/2 ton with a 350 in it used to tow his 330 Sundancer across town. Never a problem but he kept his wits about him.

We trailer our 2004 280 DA up to 3 hours in any direction. It is nearly identical in size to the 08 290 but about 1000# lighter than the 290. Our tow rig is a 2008 GMC 2500 with the boat on an aluminum tri-axle trailer. I do not hurry when towing anything, but find the boat pulls easily compared to some of the other things we tow. The previous owner used a half ton pickup and had no complaints (not that I would recommend that). Seems like brakes and transmission temperature are always the weak points but over 2 1/2 miles It will barely warm up. You definitely want 4 wheel drive on the ramp.

My kids (18 & 22) put the boat on the trailer, I have done it alone but the conditions have to be just right and plan on tying up a ramp for a little extra time. It certainly is more work for an afternoon ride, but trailering is ok by me.

just out of interest - can such boats be trailered in usa privatly at all ?

in germany 7800 lbs is maximum with a car , anything above this calls for a full size truck coupling and pneumatic brakes on the trailer.

beam is limited to 102 inch - but you could get a permit.

so in germany towing a 290 on public road calls in any case for a truck coupler , regardless what your car is able to pull.

sorry, but i didn't see this reply until just now. I actually sold my 290 2 years ago but did keep it at Conley. Hope you had a great weekend.

aerobat, to answer your questions, yes, you can tow large boats like that with a private vehicle. Over 102" they require an overside load permit, flags on the widest point and "Wide Load" signs front and rear. There are some restrictions against towing on holidays, in certain towns it's against the law to tow during business/rush hour traffic, but other than that you're pretty much free to tow on any of the freeways. If you get onto 2-lane roads you're required in many areas to have pilot cars in front and behind the tow vehicle.

I had a 330 Sundancer and towed it all over the place. I was careful to always have the permit and required equipment and to obey all the towing prohibitions. I never had a problem with it on any of my tows.

Towing something that big is not the problem. It's the launching and retrieval that's a pia. You won't want to use the boat very often because of that.
