Top End on a 280? Bravo drives....???

Hello-
I have a 1996 280 Sundancer that we are looking at in the shop . It has a single 7.4 Mercruiser with a Bravo 1 drive. The customer is stating that the boat at top end used to do 54 mph. This seems to be pretty optimistic on his part from what we can see, we have it at WOT at 45mph.

For whatever reason the customer is hung up on an immediate hole-shot reaction, which is unsual on a boat of this style/size/power. Its sluggish if you ram the the throttle right up, but if you simply throttle normally there is no delay at all

Also did Sea Ray change the drive to a Bravo 2 or Bravo 3 on this boat? The Bravo 2 or 3 would seem to be a more suitable drive for this boat

mine is a B3 with the 454... not a chance in hell this guy is going 54 mph in that boat. perhaps he's dyslexic? I have not trouble planing out with a steady increase in throtle. I'm not sure what year SR went to the B3 and for that matter they night not even be the same hull.. but I'm not sure

I have next to no experience compared to most guys here on CSR but I can tell you this, my 250 with 454/B3 won't go 54. A 1996 280 has got to weigh considerably more than mine.

The only time that boat has been 54 MPH was on the trailer going down the highway behind the truck.

I know the early 290s (1992-1994) used the B2 with the 454.

my '92 with a 454 B2 tops out about 34mph if I raise my ass out of the seat....did they make a 280 in '96?

Thanks all, we have him straight on it now........It topped out around 43 mph. Once he was shown that the speedometer only goes up to 50, he pretty much understood , his own mis-statement. It is amazing though that someone would actually want to waterski off this boat.........
