Hi,
I have a dilema. I bought a nice boat with alot of flaws. It needs transom and motor mount repair. The strigers are also comprimised with some rot. The motor was checked out and found ok(1300) hours. The drive needs a gimbel ring.Has about two inches of play.
Total cost of transom motor mount, bulkhead near motor and gimbel ring about 6000. Is it worth it?
The repair shop I had the motor checked out said the transom is usable for awhile. The motor mount could be fixed with a slurry repair.
Please advise ,thanks alot for listening

Looks to be some of the same boats in your area running for 7 to 15 grand. How long are you planning to keep it? Because you will not likely get your money out of it by reselling. There is a great post on what it takes to replace a transom on the site.

John,

I checked the listings for your boat and one in very good condition is around $11K with a trailer. I'm not sure what you paid for it, but you would add the repair costs to your purchase price to see where you end up. While I love boats, when you get into repairs like this....it can get so expensive it is not worth it.

IMHO: If you can't do allot of those repairs yourself, then owning a 23 yr old boat is going to be very expensive. There are a few on this site that are in process on these type of repairs as winter projects.

Is it worth it? Don't know what you paid for it. But if you put $6k into a $6K boat, you still have a $6k boat. ...Ron

Howdy,

$6k sounds like a large investment into a boat you might only keep 2 - 5 years.

If you looked for local fiberglassers who could do the job
you could save probably more than 50%.

I watched my neighbor rebuild the transom on a 17' aquasport with gorilla glue, fiberglass mat & rebar and it was stronger than the original.

You have to decide if it's justified... because the rewards are ...
Priceless!!!

Thank you for your reply. Have you ever heard of repairing a rotten motor mount with a slurry fix. It was a option mentioned at a repair shop. Also how long do you think it would last .
thanks,
john

I do not know of this slurry fix. If you do a search on "rotten transom", you will get some hits. A few recent have some pics of great detail. Will scare the bajeezes outa ya. It all can be done and becomes a labor of love. ...Ron
