Ok everyone here is the situation. Some time between right now and next summer I am retiring and headed to Cary, NC. I am not planning to take my boats.
My 400EC needs the three aft panels and probably the front window 5pc enclosures.
1. Since my Bimini is only 4years old I was thinking of just getting it stitched and replacing the three aft panels. OR
2. Replace everything and change the color for a lot more money. I will have the color changed from off-white to black.

The cost of number two vs just doing number one is about - $3750 difference.

If I am selling what is the payback on the cost of the new canvas?
If it is a good payback then should I spend the extra money to have everything done.

Ok, look forward to your input and questions.
thanks,
Joe

My opinion is that, while you may recieve only a fraction of your expense for new canvas, its just about the first replacement item someone sees when they look at the boat to buy it.

The savy buyer realizes how much hidden wood is used to build a Sea Ray and a boat exposed to leaks causes rot, rust and wear in the worst places. Not to menion component failure. This is especially true in the south with daily downpours in the summer. Unfortunately I have learned this lesson the hard way.

So, my thinking is...while you may only get part of your money back, I think the boat should sell faster, with money saved holding the boat for less time during its sale. If the sale misses the boating season, that cost could be substantial.

Congratulations on your retirement. I hope to join you in a few years.

When we sold our sea ray 36O I did not get any of the improvements back as far as sales price. Similar boats with zero upgrades and not in Bristol condition were selling close to what I had to sell ours for.

I Would not invest money in boat that was going to be sold soon. I'm sure others will disagree. Just my .02.

OK. I'll go first. Cary is a stones throw from the Pamlico River. Why are you not bringing the toys? You've put a lot into them. Please don't tell us your ill.

That said, I'm with Billfletcher and I'd be honest about it. 'Yes the canvas needs to be redone. If I were keeping her, I was going to do it in black. Then I thought, the next buyer may not want black. Here is the estimate for the total redo. I'll either knock that off the selling price (possible tax advantages) or write you a check at closing for $x (possible insurance value advantages). '

Personally, having been under black canvas, it's a price reducer for me. Absorbs too much heat.

My2 cents.

First impressions are everything. Your canvas unfortunately is one of the first things a prospective buyer will see. While it may cost more upfront to do the canvas, think of the extra costs for carrying it longer.

Pamlico River dumps into the Pamlico Sound which takes you across to Ocracoke, Hatteras, or Cedar Island. Some of the best boating and fishing on the east coast. Another vote to bring your toys!

x2 jut experienced the same thing with a boat I sold.

I think it depends on what condition we're talking. Are the top/windows simply coming due for replacement or does it look ratty and give the wrong impression of your boat. It's been said over and over here at CSR, 'I wonder what else they don't take care of'.

I the one case it's just an item that may be negotiated and reflected in the price. The other case may cause potential buyers to walk on by.

Everyone, Thanks for the input. Lord knows I still don't know what to do but I am thinking about it with some good info.

If I decide not to take the boat with me then it is a re-stitch and three new aft panels. If I take it then it is all new. Part of my reason for not taking it is even with retirement I will be busy with my son. He owns GolfEtc of Cary and is very busy. I want to spend time helping him so that I can give him more time with his family and when he needs to go play golf with his friends some who are PGA pros. So I have a tough decision to make.
Again, thanks and please continue the input not just here but throughout this site. It is always helpful in one way or another.

Well...First off...Glad your not sick. And it's a great thing to be able to get back to family. Add to that, anything disposable income (golf, boats, etc....) in this economy is tough and hats off to you for wanting to be there for your son. Now.....

Tape this to a brick wall and bang your head against it. What are you thinking. When your son has to work......What kid wouldn't want to go fishing with grandpa? Sit in grandpa's lap and learn how to drive the big boat? Sleep over night at a marina? I'd give my prostate gland for that if the damn urologist hadn't already taken it!!!

All kidding aside....Think this one through Quartermaster soldier. This isn't a tour at Fort Lee where you scratch your head because you keep ending up every few years. This is one tour of duty you are NEVER going to get twice in life.

I agree wholeheartedly. The Seadoo Jet boat I bought for my grand daughter when she was 4 years old. She loved it. Unfortunately, my son moved from upstate NY to Cary, NC and started his business a year later. I still have the boat. That one is going with me.
So you know QM? I miss being a QM soldier. Heck I just miss being a soldier.
