I am beginning the planning for a week to week and a half cruise from home in Knoxville down to Chattanooga for a couple of days for the Riverbend festival, then possibly down to Guntersville for a day or two, then back to Chattanooga for a day or two, and then back home to Knoxville. the crew will be myself, the admiral, two kids (7 and 11), and one or two dogs (one small dog and possibly one lab). I have quite a few questions and comments...

1. Any suggestions for a first-time lengthy cruise away from home? (All maintenance will be done and the boat will be ready to go. This is more of a packing type question. I will have extra impellers [engine and genny] and tools onboard. I do not and won't have any spare props.)
2. I am very familiar with about half of the trip... most of the way to Chattanooga, but have never been past there. I want to go through the gorges downriver from Chattanooga as they look pretty amazing from the pictures I've seen.
3. I believe there will be 4 locks each way. I've never locked through, but have read up plenty and watched many videos and I am confident I can do that. I am also aware of marinas along the way for gas and needed marina supplies.
4. We plan on anchoring somewhere in Chattanooga and can resupply as necessary there. They have very good transit around the waterfront and we can get to where we need to go to get anything we need.
5. Is there any reason to go to Guntersville/anything to see or do there? Who all is from there or knows the area? Marinas there worth stopping in on?
6. Will anyone be in Chattanooga for the festivities? We haven't been to Riverbend yet, but know quite a bit about it. I know we need pins/admission if we want to go ashore for it.
7. Anyone interested in joining us for any or all of the trip? John (Loneranger) - interested?
8. Does anyone know if the locks down around and below Chattanooga are operating as expected or will be then? I will call and verify no planned shutdowns for that timeframe, but I haven't yet.

As I said, this will be our first lengthy trip on the boat/multiple overnight stays onboard. We've only done single overnights within an hour or so of home.

Any and all guidance or tips would be appreciated! Please don't take any knowledge for granted. I'd rather be suggested something I already know than not be told something I need to know. Thanks!

Matt,I am slipped in Guntersville and would be glad to help you out as far as a slip, on shore dinner recommendations and the like. Compared to the places you are, and will be, on this trip, I doubt Guntersville has much to offer you and your family. However, if you have specific questions I'd be happy to help.As far as the locks & local knowledge, I have an app put out by the TVA. You may have or know about it but it is a great one stop shop for lock information. To my knowledge, the locks on this end operate 24/7/365. Of course commercial traffic rules the road but a phone call ahead (via the app), could save you a headache or at least help with planning/timing. If you do decide to come all the way down to Guntersville, I might be able to meet you maybe for like the last hour or so of the trip, escort you to our favorite cove for a meal/ swim or just a downtime rest stop, and then to our marina (Alred Marina mm357) for your stay over.As to not ramble on further, I will put together a handful of links that may be of value to you. Like I said, not much in Guntersville that you can't get in the bigger towns you live in and mention, but we do have some real nice water to boat on. Let me know if you have anything specific I can help with.

I appreciate the information about Guntersville. We will evaluate coming down that far. As I said, I definitely want to cruise through the gorges at a minimum. I do have the TVA app. I use it all the time to check water levels and more. Also, thank you for the information and the offer to help. As I said, if we make it that far, I'll let you know. And yes, if you do have links for things down that way, I would much appreciate them to familiarize myself with the area. Thank you!

Matt I've. made the trip a couple time before but it has been a while back. The river is very tight around Chat so don't plan to hang out overnight there. Maybe best to head down stream. Have you checked for a slip / dockage during riverbend? From what I hear it is hard to come by.

Chuck: Thanks for the info. We would plan on settling in for overnight in a cove near downtown. We haven't looked for a slip. We weren't really planning on it due to cost. Maybe I'll check and see what they run.

Matthew,

Scott Manning is the MM manager at their dealer there. He controls all the city docks as well as the docks at this MM store. His # is 423-266-1316. His reservations clerk is Shelby Reuse at the same #. I met with him two weeks ago and he said Riverbend was already booked for slips. I bet he would give you some great tips on where to hang out though...

My Marina is Chickamauga, Erwin Marine's place. They could tell you about slip availability there (above Chickamauga Dam)... 423-622-1978.

You may want to go down stream a couple miles just past the big bend by I24 the river spits around an island one side z(west I think) has a great anchorage spot.

Matt,

I too am at Guntersville and mwph and I would be happy to show you the sights and some history about the area. I have maps of the Tennessee river from 1936 showing the area before it was flooded to become Lake Guntersville. There is also a carving in the hillside by Andrew Jackson showing where he hid munitions in a cave during the Civil War. My wife and I will be retired by June and living at the Lake Guntersville Yacht Club (mm359). We also had a 290 Sundancer, so if you come down this far, look us up.

I plan on going for the final night of riverbend. Would love to raft up with you if you are going to be there.

Well, based on a few different issues, we decided today that we are not making the trip down to Riverbend. I wish things were different, but child behavior issues and only last minute coverage at work have determined that the trip won't happen right now. If we make a run down later this summer, I'll post again. Too bad there won't be a big event to see.

Sucks Man! Sorry it did not work out. Was looking forward to the "Play by Play" afterwards.
