LONG POND — Tunkhannock Township officials can not fathom why someone cast off a 26-foot Sea Ray boat named Nausea on Hypsy Gap Road.
The boat was found moored to a telephone pole, sitting about four feet into the road. Skid marks on the hull indicate the dumper tied the boat to the pole then drove away, pulling the boat off the trailer.
"This really has me torqued," said Bruce Walder, Tunkhannock roadmaster. "I can't believe someone had the audacity to dump this off on the road. It's bad enough we get bags of trash. A 26-foot boat is ridiculous."
Walder said it took six men and a dump truck with a trailer two hours to move the boat from the road to the township building.
The boat was ditched sometime after 5 p.m. Sunday.
"It still had snow in it, so it must have come from a higher elevation on the mountain," Walder said.
"It is a shame that taxpayers have to pay for this kind of stuff. The township is not in the trash business. It is an expense to taxpayers," said Dot Trauger, assistant zoning officer. Already it has cost $600 in manpower and equipment to move the boat, and it will cost more to dispose of it. Most likely the township will get a Dumpster for the boat and pay to have it hauled away, according to Walder.
The Sea Ray is not usable because the back is rotted out and there is no engine. The only identifying feature is the name Nausea on the back. The Pennsylvania boat registration number has been peeled off and painted over but the Pennsylvania Game Commission will attempt to reveal the numbers in a crime lab.
"I have never heard of anyone dumping an object this big on the road" Walder said. He was not sure what the fine would be, but he wants to see the maximum penalty imposed.
"We are going to make a statement about this. This kind of thing will not be tolerated anymore," he said.
The state Game Commission, Bethlehem Water Authority Police, state police and Pocono Mountain Regional Police are investigating.
Anyone with information about the abandoned boat is asked to call Walder at 570 646-3008, ext. 129
