Not sure what I hit yesterday but it looks like I need a new prop. The prop itself doesn’t appear to be messed up but you can feel the edges of the blades are not as smooth as they once were.

Noticeable problems:
Max speed was 40 mph
Had to trim the boat down almost all the way to get going

I started looking here for props:

other ideas or suggestions on which one to get?

2006 220 Select with a 350 Mag.

It sounds like you may have spun the prop hub so now your prop is spinning a bit thus making it more difficult to come on plane as well as limiting your top speed. It will just get worse if you continue to run the boat as is if the hub is bad. Prop hubs can be replaced and that may be a cheaper way to go than buying a new prop.

Take a look at this. http://www.mercstuff.com/spunprop.htm

Not to contradict Dave, but if the hub was spun you would never be able to get up on plane. I spun the hub on my old 220SD and could only idel my way back to port. if i tried to advance the throttle the engine would over rev quickly.

questions i have are. 1 what kind of drive and what kind of prop (stainless or aluminum ) and 2. do you boat in shallow sandy bottoms. 3 what was your WOT speed prior to your 40MPH current speed. 4 have you added wieght to your boat (more people, more fuel, more water. etc..)

when I got my 220SD w/ Bravo II and Stainless prop. I remember I had to be real carefull when I flushed the drive cause the blades where so sharp I could slice my arm and not even know it.

the more I used it the duller they got. If you actually have sharp gouges on the edges then you definatly have hit something and probably have some cavitation which will drop youre top end speed.

sounds like you dinged up your props whne you grounded a couple weeks ago. even small dings on the edge of you're props can cause major cavatition and effect your speed.

those look pretty messed up to me. I would look to replace them before they lead to drive problems related to cavitation or vibration.

Sorry....

1. Alpha I with Stainless
2. Nope, most of the time I’m in real deep water
3. WOT speed prior to this was around 51mph
4. Nothing that wasn’t there before

I just took the boat to a carwash to clean it up. While I was there I sprayed water on the prop to make it spin. What I noticed was the prop wasn’t fully balanced. There was the slightest movement in the prop…

Looks like I will be calling the dealership tomorrow (cha-ching / here we go)

The prop may need rebalancing also but I still feel you have a bad prop hub. Keep us posted as to what the problem turns out to be.

If you did not break off a lobe on the prop you may have just bent it enough to cause the problem. That does not necessarily call for a replacement. Find a prop shop and have them balance it and let you know what's wrong with it. I had both my bravo 3 props balanced and cupped for less than $300.00 for both. Your single should not cost much more than $125.00 if it's not too major. Your dealer will do the same thing and charge you a surcharge to do the leg work. Strainless props are repairable.

i know this was for the origional poster but you recomend me getting a stainless prop from looking at the pics of mine?

crock1 - Your screwed. :smt021 You need a new prop or a new boat driver, which ever comes first. Oh, your the boat drive. :smt089 Go to do a search on props and find a replacement. Your going to need it sooner or later. Aluminum props are fairly inexpenisve. Get the same one you have on your boat now, same pitch and size. :smt024

Was that sarcasm or are you realy serious.?

I think he was kidding you! don't sweat it!

Disclaimer : I know a little bit about the Bravo's, much of nothing about the alpha's

I know the bravo's hubs are designed to shear to keep you for doing real damage to the sternDrive becuase of their power. I don't know if the Alpha's will shear the same way. they may not and you may have a hub that is damaged from the impact.

also since you're prop is Stainless and you are in Deep water I would not expect sidiment to have worn the edges of your prop. so the rough edges are probably a result of the impact you had which probably means some prop issues.

Also 10 MPH difference with no change in boat configuration and wave conditions is a lot.

My guess is that either the prop has been damaged (out of alignment) and / or you have some drive damage. Either way I would have it checked out and find out exactly what is wrong before it gets worse.

agian i'm no expert, just going on gut feeling based on the info you provided.
