Help clean up Tice's Shoal on June 23

STAFF REPORT
It's a hot spot in Barnegat Bay, somewhat for fishing, but far more popular among boaters who just go there to hang out.

Its popularity has brought with it a negative side: trash and debris, particularly in the form of broken glass from bottles, as well as cans and other garbage.

After seeing his brother-in-law taken to the emergency room for stitches after cutting his foot on a piece of glass last summer, Lance James of Forked River is trying to do something about it: James is issuing a call for boaters who anchor up at the shoal to come out June 23 to help clean it up.

"There are huge amounts of sharp shards of broken glass, cans and other garbage on the bottom of the bay," James wrote in an e-mail to the Asbury Park Press. "Early in every year the broken glass and cans push toward the shore, along with all the other garbage, driftwood, etc.

"This year there seems to be so much more," he said. "In one 10-by-10 spot, I must have picked up over 50 big pieces of glass alone. Had I dug down six inches, I would have found triple the amount."

James is asking that boaters bring garbage bags, shovels, rakes and screens to filter out the garbage and allow the sand through.

"I'm hoping to get at least 100 people to help," he wrote.

"It's really a shame that a beautiful spot has become so dangerous to be barefooted. We need to clean this spot up so we can enjoy it for years to come."

Tice's Shoal is located on the bay side of Island Beach State Park.
