In the process of getting my engine started, I had to put the gear in neutral by pressing the button in the throttle stick. Now it is stuck in neutral and I can't get it to shift to either forward or reverse. Anyone had experienced this situation please advise. Thanks so much.

Sounds like the button is stuck?

I've had that happen on occasion. Usually, quickly wiggling the stick back and forth (a few degrees forward and backwards of neutral) has allowed the button to pop out. I've never had to go further than that, so I can't comment on taking it apart. But, it could be that the inner return spring is jammed.

You could also try tapping in on the button more - as you move the stick.

By the way, you have an MPI engine so you shouldn't need to advance the throttle to start the engine. You may already know that, just an FYI if you didn't.

I've already done all the shaking and wiggling of the throttle as well as the button. Anyway, we put it in forward or reverse position to spray starter fluid in the fuel injector air intake, that is how we got the boat started. In the process the gear got stucked in neutral and what we've found is that there is a small metal block (1 1/2" L x 1/4" H x 1/4"W) that when the button is pushed slides out (neutral position) so that the throttle can be move forward or reverse to rev. the engine. This part slipped out from its place. If we can't find out how it is put together, we can just buy the assembly and reinstall the 2 cables (gear and gas) and we should be back in service. I have written the part number, I only need to find out where can I buy it from (any recommended boat parts store). Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much

Ok, yes, now that you're describing it, I do know the piece you are talking about - but I really haven't had a throttle box apart in such a long time that I would be able to help. Heck, the last one I had apart was probably one from the late 70's - and it was probably 15 or 20 years ago!

Now that you mention it, I do recall having a similar problem with a model year 2000 boat. Unfortunately my solution won't help you as the boat was currently under warranty when it happened so the whole thing was just replaced.

Could this help?

There must be some local Merc dealers near you?

I know the old Power Pilots had a part like this....I too can't remember what it's was called. I ended up finding one and made some spares in my machine shop because it was an obsolete part. If you had a photo that may jog some memory's.. Some of us are getting old and need to see a photo.. and where is that nurse with my oat meal?????

Hello where am I?????????

"Throttle stuck in neutral"??? I thought this thread was offering me some career help.

I fear the "throttle" problem is back at the drive and that it might be expensive. Seriously.

I've had the Commander 3000 apart when my button stuck on my 99 270. I used a pair of channel lock pliers and lightly grabbed the outer part of the button that still was sticking out. Pull straight back and the button will come off. Behind that is the piece that clutches the shift arms in the controller. I was able to spray mine with WD to get it to work free enough to use the shifter again. But the controller really messed up shortly there after. I couldn't get it to shift from forward or reverse to neutral with any regularity. Very dangerous when docking.

When I tore mine apart, the controller (part containing the shift arms that connect to the cables) is packed full of grease from the factory, the gears that mate inside were worn because over time the grease got purged out of the gear teeth and began to wear.

I would replace the controller if you can find one. I thought Mercruiser obsoleted the 3000 replaement parts around 2005...sorry I can't remember what they changed over to...I would replace the controller if it is a 3000 series, once they are worn, they are junk.

btw - fwiw - I'm not a fan of using starting fluid on gas boats...those fumes in a bilge could light up your day.
