Threw a power steering belt today. Any tricks to replacing? Special techniques or tools? Haven't done this repair before and don't want to pay someone stupid $$$$ to do it for me. It seems pretty straight forward. At first glance, I didn't see any type of a tensioner on the pump/pulley like the alternator. Boat is 40 min away so want to make sure I'm prepared with everything I need.

Can't say for your boat for sure but if you do not see a belt tensioner pulley, the power steering pump itself will have adjustment bolts which will allow you adjust its tension. You should really only need the belt and some socket wrenches and ratchet. Don't pay someone to do it because it should be really easy and straight forward.

After installing and adjusting, don't go crazy and super tighten the thing as it may break the pulley itself off. Power steering doesn't need to be as tight compared to the alternator. You should have maybe around 1/2" to 1" deflection. After some break in period, the belt will stretch and you should just re-tighten should it squeal.

Finally got back to the boat today. $14 part and 10 min fix. Lake was dead calm and nobody out. I love weekdays on the lake.

Was the PS belt old and did it break? If not there was a reason why it got thrown off. Try to find why....before it happens again.
