Thoughts on putting snap-in carpet on the swim platform

I found a much cheaper way to do it because I'm a cheap guy. I buy indoor/outdoor carpet that looks like Sea Ray Berber from a nearby carpet store for about $200. I template the everything, bridge, aft deck, both swim platforms, and steps. I bind it all myself with Sunbrella binding and install it with snaps. Once I put it down in the spring it stays there until the fall with the exception of a few times I pull up the swim platform pieces to clean under them. They don't have rubber backing so they dry pretty quickly and I clean them with boat soap every time the boat gets washed. Even though the swim platform pieces are exposed to the elements all year I still get about 4 years out of the set. Mark

Not sure if you guys caught it but he's doing the marine weave "carpet" which is nothing like carpet and definitely nothing like the black rubber backed original cockpit carpets. It can get wet, dirty, soaked, and dry in a meter of minutes not to mention cleaned with boat soap and water, just like your deck.

I personally want the stuff everywhere I can.

Thanks for commenting on this. I've never seen it installed anywhere or stood on it. Have you? Is it a significant upgrade over the stock Berber? Does it get slippery when it's wet? I sure like the look of it from the 2"x2" sample I have.

We put DECKadence on our platform last season. You can hose it off, remove it, clean underneath and water just passes through. The best part though is it doesn't hold the sun's heat. Great stuff!

check it out on our local guy's site: http://www.kpcarpetmatting.ca/deckadencemarineflooring.html

Mark,
That stuff looks like a great alternative to the standard carpet. I like its claims of anti-fatigue properties and you can't beat the warranty! Did you need any snaps to keep it in place? (It sounds like its not necessary) If not, what did you do with the original snaps on the floor? Did you remove them & fill the holes or just roll this out over them? My carpets really coming due for replacement soon & I may want to go this route also. As far as price point, I don't need to know the particulars but, how's the cost in relation to standard carpet? Thanks!

I missed the part were you mentioned the "weave" carpet. If it's the "Infinity" brand, which I believe is the major player (actual manufacturer) right now, it's the same stuff that our pontoon line uses (with a 1/4" closed-cell foam back). If not, it's probably the same idea. The stuff is VERY nice. I was reluctant to order a boat with it (partly for the upgrade cost) because of the worry about being slippery. But, after getting a boat in with it, there's no worries - it has sufficient grip to it. It is nice to walk on, too - very soft under foot. Verify the foam thickness of what you buy - my rep mentioned that it's made with varying thicknesses of foam, including none.

One thing of note, though, I don't believe it's going to be very good at "wiping" dirt from shoes. Meaning, on your swim platform, I don't think it's going to keep as much dirt from entering the boat as a carpet would.

I have it being installed on the entire bridge of a 56 Hatteras I captain Ina few weeks. I do have pretty extensive knowledge about the product and have walked on plenty of them. In fact I'm also having some of my boats done with it in certain places.

Also, if you are ordering from Snap In you probably talked to my girlfriend. I have no affiliation with the company but I see the marine weave as a HUGE upgrade from any of the other marine exterior carpets. It's not really fair to call it a carpet really, it more of a less expensive alternative to a synthetic teak product.

We are installing this product from Corinthian , we saw it on a CSR members boat at block and loved it. It dries fast no rubber backing and looks classy. Prob similar to the snap in product.seems people are getting away from the soggy carpets

Todd...

Yes there are snaps. I put the DECKadence on the platform and on the platform at the transom above the swim platform. Snaps we're put along the boat/transom edges of the two areas. It didn't take many. I'll dig some pics up and post here in an hour or so once I get to my PC in the office.

Price point was great. Cut, snaps and install was 900 bucks.

Sunbrella binding requires sewing, right? (ie: it's not "iron-on") Sounds like a good alternative but the sewing might be a deal-killer for many. I can sew but I'm guessing the machine I have won't cut it.

Ok...finally got a few minutes to grab some pics for you guys. DECKadence is the product. We put it on the swim platform and step platform at the transom. Snaps are used along the hull purely to stop it from washing overboard while underway.

Super easy to clean, does not hold the heat from the sun and quite comfortable to walk on. I'll use this in the seating area in the stern when I have to replace the carpet.

Ron, yes you have to sew it on and you need a binding machine or a walking foot sewing machine. I have a walking foot machine that I use for the carpet and all of the canvas I made for my aft cabin and my Sundancer before it. Mark

Hey copb8tx,

Any update on the new cockpit carpet? I'm trying to decide between weave #3 or #5 for my 340. I like CAMELLA's pics of the 480 with #5 but was hoping to see how yours turned out before making a final decision. Any chance you could post some pics of the end result?

Thanks!

Funny you should ask. I laid it in this weekend and quite frankly, I'm very disappointed.

We picked weave #3 based on a 3" x 3" sample. The sample showed to have the weave be a flat finish whereas the actual product was very shiny and in my opinion cheap looking. It looks like sheets of pressed plastic laying there. Not very inviting under foot either as it's quite thin as compared to your typical snap in carpet. I've already sent the supplier a note about how the product doesn't match the swatch and our displeasure. They suggested I put it in and see if the shininess wears off although I don't see that happening.

I will say that the product is bound well and fits the boat's space perfectly. We're just very disappointed with the material. With what I know now I'd save 30% and go with the standard Sea Ray Berber.

I'll try and post some pics tomorrow. Not sure how they'll show though.

Bart,
I wonder if it's a bad lot or just that color. I have the #5 and it does not look cheap at all, I am very pleased with it.

I'm not sure. It definitely is different to the sample and what I was expecting. The #3 color is right for my boat with its tan canvas although I really liked the #5 sample as well. Bummer is that I was SO excited to get this carpet and upgrade the look.

BTW, apparently I took 'before' pictures but forgot the 'after' pictures. I should be up there again this weekend and will try to take a few and post them.

So I finally got a few pictures of the carpet laid down in the cockpit. I haven't installed the snaps since I don't know if I want it or not. Obviously pictures are difficult to judge by but overall I think it has a cheap plasticy look.

To me it also feels somewhat thin and would be slippery when wet. But that's conjecture since I haven't had it out of the slip yet.

Thoughts?

I generally try not to make negative comments about other people's boats, but I'm not sure I would be satisfied with that product if it were mine.

I really want to hear honest feedback. Positive or negative. I'm bringing my wife up to the boat to see it this weekend. If she dislikes it as much as I think she will I'm going to see if there's anything the vendor can do.

Is it ill-fitting or does it just seem that way b/c of how it's situated? I can't say anything about the the feel or texture from where I'm sitting. The PO of my boat had new snap-ins made but never installed the snaps. I still haven't myself and not sure I will. Though I am very happy with the quality. It doesn't have the black backing - I forget the name of the company but they had their business card sewn into a plastic sheath on the underside.

It fits well as far as cut and pattern go. I just have it laid in with no snaps. If I were to keep it I'd definitely install the snaps because it moves around quite easily with just walking on it.
