Been looking at redoing the cockpit, leaning towards AquaMat/PVC weave. There are 2 options for backing, felt and a rubberized style. Corinthian calls the the one HydraFelt and the other AquaLoc.

Is one better than the other? Pros/cons, general thoughts or experience with either?

We went with Solar Tan w/AquaLoc for the heads, steps, helm, and cockpit... We should have done it sooner and tossed that shitty Berber a long time ago. And will be doing the upper and lower swim steps soon.

Had it for one season and it had to go. Though its really nice and easy to clean, step on it once with barefeet in the sun and its like lava

Dave - talk to Dave at The Canvas Medic @Quint4 . I did the patterns and he made up the carpet - I couldn't be happier. Based upon his recommendation, I used the Infinity luxury vinyl weave with the 80 mil HD foam backing. He would be the one to talk foam vs felt also. Another option for you.

Dave mine has the AquaLoc rubberized back and we love it. Water will run under it and it can breathe. Check it out anytime you like. You know where she lives.

I see so many Sea Ray's here on the FORUM with cockpit floor coverings.

While they look great and are likely easier on your feet as compared to the naked fiberglass floor it seems to me to be another maintenance item, and a big one at that.

I like the idea of being to hose out the beach sand, leaves and dirt. A little grease, well it comes right off with the scrub brush on the pole.

I'm sure I'm missing something here, there must be some real big advantage to the tradeoff for the cost and amount of work required to care for and maintain these carpets.

My 450 DA came with the snaps, but no carpets, a PO must have had them at one time.

Not being a smartass, just hope someone here can 'splain it to me.

What am I missing?

THANK YOU !

RWS, I'm with you. We had carpet on our last boat (330DA) and liked it. The 450EB we have now had carpet originally, but was long gone when we bought the boat. I wanted to replace the carpet, I even made templates, but never got around to it. Bare fiberglass worked for us for all the reasons you mention.

It might also be location driven. We are in south Florida and spend a lot of time in the water snorkeling, swimming, hanging out. Bare just works better for us.

There is one positive about cockpit carpet, it does reduce sound/engine noise.

Thanks
Larry

Order samples of each 2" x 4" ?

I ordered samples, some Aqualoc, some Hydrafelt. Got me thinking why the two, options inside vs outside applications? Felt meant to be glued down?

Inquiring minds need to know!

This is an option as well, and likely easier to maintain. Not sure if the wife would like it, but I may try it for a season. My guess is she would think it looks unfinished. How does gel coat react to red wine stains? Regardless, the carpet has to go.

I have never done any maintenance on ours. I have removed it one time in 18 months to hose down the cockpit floor. I have never even hosed down the Aquaweave carpet. It does help with engine noise I think. If something were to get spilled, I would just take a water hose and wash it out…..

Don't know HydraFelt.

We had Corinthian with AquaLoc backing on our previous boat, carpet was 11-12 years old when we sold, still almost good as new. We only powerwashed (electric) it from time to time.

We just hosed down the bridge and cockpit, carpet and all. (But we never did grease on the floor.)

No significant work, though. Same as hosing down bare fiberglass.

And I need the cushioning.
