Well, I for one am very happy she is back. The thought of any American unjustly in the Russian prison system is sickening to me. I'm glad she is out, wish her well, and hope she will begin to see this country in a more honest light.
However, the price we had to pay to get her back is proof of ineptitude. We have given over a hundred billion to Ukraine to fight this war. That has been mostly cash for them to do what they like with it. Given that is nearly double the annual budget of the Russians, it would be fair to ask if we even have any idea where it is all going.
I think the first part of negotiating for her return should have been for Ukraine to do a prison swap for her right away. It should not have been hard to motivate Ukraine to do so.
I'm just thinking off the cuff, but Biden could have approached Zelensky and said something like, "I'm getting on a plane in about six hours (he could look at his watch when he says it for effect), and if Ms. Griner has not been released, you won't get the billions of dollars."
And son of a bitch, I bet she would have been released.
After all, it worked for his son...
Not sure I agree with the first part as I am not sure I am "happy" she is free. But I do like the second part of swapping all American prisoners to the Ukraine for the funds. That would have been the right thing to do and go from their.
