I was driving thru Iowa yesterday in route to California and I stopped in the roadside rest area on Interstate 80 at about the 79 mile marker. (About 35 miles west of Des Moines). The rest area had these signs all over.

According to this now you can't even smoke outside! These nuts have gone too far now:smt021! Bad enough you can't smoke in most bars and clubs now, but even there as far as I'm concerened that should be up to the owner of the place. Many places I go to now if you wish to smoke they have an outdoor patio with tables and chairs to go to. And even be served your drinks and food there. Typical Left leaning Iowa...After all these folks are why we got stuck with McCain!:smt089

Makes me wish I had an older truck with a turned up "B model CAT" and give em this!

Next they'll make sure you can't open your window while you're smoking in your car, for fear of second hand smoke. idiots!

and it is about time......sorry but I am all for not smoking in restaurants/bars etc. And you know what....I'm not sorry either.
Then I should have a choice too, same as you. The old days you had a smoking section, whats so bad about that. But now even outside, this is nuts.

I am a former smoker for many years but I have to agree with Trit21 on this one. I see both sides but I prefer the non-smoking side of life.

and how is it a choice when the smoking section is in the same building as the non-smoking section? Some smokers are very courteous and don't leave butts on the ground (as Scott has mentioned) but the few ruined it for the many. There are several cruise ships that are TOTALLY non-smoking and even Disney is getting into the act. Pretty soon the whole park will be smoke free.

how can anyone justify taking a persons personal freedoms away, when no one else is affected? (referring to smoking outside) And you feel that someone should be stripped of their rights so you don't see a butt on the ground?

I feel that it is fair to leave the smoking orientation of an establishment up to its owner, and even to mandate a sign on the door that states whether it is smoking or non. If you want to smoke, and it is non smoking, don't go in. If it is smoking, and you don't wish to be around it, stay the hell out.

Why is it that people can justify taking other's rights away just because it isn't something they relate to? Everyone seems to forget that our government was designed "for the people," not "for the non-smokers". People who are for this type of legislation are nothing more than selfish

totally untrue. this is not on the same level as religion. at least with religion, people who oppress others have a foundation for why they are doing so!

Yeah, I like my food and drinks smoke-free thank you. I grew up (as I'm sure many here did) with a house that had blue smoke hanging in it during /after family and friends were over.

I think it made me more intolerant of the smoke now. Even outside, I find it turns my stomach when I catch a whiff. Used to be(in the beginning of the smoke free environment movement), here at work, the smokers were only allowed to smoke outside... they'd prop themselves right at the doorways. As soon as you opened the door to leave, you were hit with a huge cloud of smoke that coated your lungs and clothes... Thankfully, they've moved them off to the back 40. It's sad, but I sometimes see them out there, in the blizzards, rain, and ice, smoking away. It's a nasty addictive habit.

I don't have a problem with folks rights. But think about how pervasive the smoke can be for the rest of us that don't smoke.

I think his point is some people have a strong opinion one way or the other and you won’t change their mind.

There are people who want to ban PWC and power boats because of noise pollution and they say they pollute the water, look around the docks at some marinas and the water doesn’t look to inviting.

If it’s something you enjoy you want to keep that right, if not F em.

oh no. you have opened a can of worms with that statement about the banning of boats.

don't you know the people on this forum like boats? shame on you!

I think we should pass legislation banning bad breath next. I was a victim of it this morning, and it made me uncomfortable. That person should not have the right to poison my air.

can we go further?

How about perfume.....man I 'HATE' when some blue hair get's in the elevator with half a bottle of channel #5 on her body and clothes....!!!!

Thankfully they banned NJ from farting. It was getting pretty bad.

I also think they should limit how many words a woman can speak in a day.
