Season after season I pine for a boat and always find an excuse not to purchase and put it off. A friend or coworker will tease, "the best days of a boat owners life are the day they buy and the day they sell, har har har", "do you think you're up to owning a boat (because you're woman)". Or just being afraid of the financial commitment "what if we have a downsizing at work?", ...endless psych-outs.

Two weeks ago we got the news that a coworker, and recent retiree had died. This guy did everything right. Built up some wealth for a very comfortable retirement, retired young, moved to FL and was looking forward to getting a boat and spending leisurely days with his wife out on the water. He had maybe 3 months of "quality" retirement, and then he got sick. Never got the boat, spent his time doing chemo and watched his retirement dream fade away.

So, this is the year.

This is the year, to put my fears aside, this is the year to tell the naysayers "shut up" (and stop being jealous), this is the year to put me first and go for my dream. This is the year I stop being a dreamer and start living the dream.

I've spent a week poking around places like Yachtworld, Craigslist, etc. to understand what I could get for my price range, joined this forum and poked around to see what people like/don't like about the types of boats they have. Finally, I have hooked up with a broker and discussed my thinkings, looked at a few boats in that category and now we are off.

My status should change from "boatless" to 240 Sundeck owner by June 1.

This is my first post on the forum, stay tuned for more of my adventure!

Good luck, Susan.

We pulled the trigger (partly) based on some health reasons for both my old man and myself. Wouldn't do to get to the end and still be wondering :D

You'll of course need pics once you've contracted!

Best of luck. No reason to be scared. Just enjoy and be happy. Thats what I did and im as happy as a pg in s..t..

Way to go Susan...our story is similar. We had a string of 3 happen within a span of 4 months. That was over 10 years ago. We haven't looked back and love the boating lifestyle.

Looking forward to more news and pics!

Mark

Best of luck in your search.

Be sure to get a friend who knows about boats to help you look.
I don't trust brokers, sellers or surveyors very much when their spending your money!
Dont spend more than you want to because, boats are not inexpensive after the inital purchase.

I absolutely do not agree with the saying "the best days of a boat owners life"...

In the preparations leading up to the last hurricane making landfall, I saw some very concerned men and women lashing down their boats like their lives depended on it....
The ones who joked about hoping to loose their boats only wanted to get another one!
Bigger or smaller but, I heard no one said they wanted to be boatless and start a stamp collection.

I will never be without a boat (even if its a rowboat) because, it's such a part of me and my family enjoys it.

You either get it or you don't.

Cheers and good luck.

Mark.

Those people that say buying your boat is the 2nd best day of your life just don't get it. Someone said that to me one day at a gas station. It was mid October, 85 degrees and I was going boating with my dad.

Here is a video I shot last year. Sun setting over the Meldahl Dam on my 50th birthday. One of the worst days of my life! :)

For many of us, you have to experience a personal tragedy to realize how short life really is. I decided 5 years ago, that the amount of money in my account wasn't going to determine my happiness, so I turned it into something I've always wanted. Haven't regretted it yet.

Don't let any person steal your dream.

Susan,

Where are you located? I just decided to start looking for a 240 Sundeck on Wednesday night, went to look at a few on Friday and just got the title today and boat will be delivered tomorrow.

I got a killer deal so don't be armed at the asking prices.

PM me for more details if you are interested.

Looking fwd to the pics, happy hunting. I was happy when I sold my first Sea Ray only because I could start looking for the 2nd.

Cool! Welcome!

Same here, I waited for a long while (6 years) before pulling the trigger. Will have my surveys done this Tuesday.

Hope you find a boat you like soon, because it's a time consuming yet fun process. :)

I think the saddest days I have had is every time I have sold a boat, even though I have been moving up each time. There has always been so many good memories with the previous boat

That is exactly why I would think selling a boat would be a GREAT day...cuz now you have the money for your NEXT boat!

Go for it!! I have owned a boat for twenty years and just sold a boat in February, and now in April, have its replacement sitting at my dock!

Be sure to get a knowledgable and accredited surveyor to do a full survey of the boat including water testing and have the engines checked thoroughly by a mechanic before signing the deal!

Best wishes!
Rob

Susan,

Good for you!! I don't think you will regret the decision. I always try to live for today with an eye on tomorrow. Thus I spend on things that will provide happy times and memories for the family but don't leave myself penniless so that I can continue to enjoy these things into the future.
There is nothing like boating in my opinion! Best of luck in your search!!

Susan, A 240 SD is a great boat, one of the best boats made by Sea Ray... We love our little SD... I found that once your get in, and start using the boat, you find that you want a bigger boat, or one which you spend over nights in... But to start the 240 SD is a great choice.

Go for it. Take your time, and find the right boat / deal. Take a boating safety class, and if you are totally new, hire a captain for a few hours to help you get comfortable running and docking the boat. Some investment up front will pay dividends in confidence. Lastly... Dont let the "Anicondas" in your circle of friends and coworkers squeeze the breath out of your dream before it's realized!

There was a cool quote in the Dominick tribute thread...

The Ride of Your Life Doesn't Start Somewhere Down the Road -- “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”
