Thinking I need a Chrome Anchor

We just missed it.....:smt009

Have any of you ordered and received one of the SS Plow style anchors from MarinePartDepot yet?

I'm curious about the quality and finish...... is it as good as they describe.... mirror finished stainless?

I'm about ready to order one of their MPD_602D Hinged plow 15.5 LB for our SLX 250. They rate it for boats under 30 ft. which ours is ...... being 26 ft. Does anyone know what the "thickness" of the end which attaches to the chain is? I want to order a swivel SS anchor connector and would need to know how thick the anchor casting is where it attaches to the swivel in order to get the correct size swivel connector.

They also list a MPD_602A ( out of stock) which is a 26 lb hinged plow anchor for boats under 34 ft. Seems like a huge difference to me from the 15.5 # and 26 # for boats not too far apart in size..... I guess I'm hoping that if I order the 15.5 LB hinged plow that I'm not undersized....

thanks,

What I want to know is how these things hold up after regular usage. I actually use my anchor on a regular basis and am somewhat doubtful that these beauties will look as nice after some action.

I saw that Joe (firecadet) said his looked good, but anyone else care to add their experiences. We went thorugh this same thing last year, so I know there are some folks out there with at least a year's worth of experience with these anchors. How did they hold up?

Thanks for posting that question....:thumbsup:

Good news / bad news...

First the bad news;

They scratch (of course) if you anchor in rocks... and lose a bit of their shine if you anchor in sand... and 'muck' has no effect.

Now the good news;

They're very durable and besides, they look way better than galvanized anchors even when they're scratched up and more good news... if you don't lke the scratches you can polish them out fairly easily.

I used mine several times last summer and though they scratch, they can be polished out if you desire. I even have a large bent ding in one plow. Mine is not polished out and the scratches don't show that much.. Still very "blingy"...

I like it much better than the galvanized one I had prior to this one. I don't have a wash down system on the bow and will not install one. I found moving the anchor up and down in the water clears all the debris and mud with no problems. I also spray it with Saltaway which I keep on board in a cheap spray bottle.

thanks,

The one I showed is a MarinePartdepot anchor. I rub it down with wax to remove any surface rust spots and it looks as good as new when done.

thanks for the input...... Did you get the 15.5 # or the 26# for your boat?

15.5. Also, mine is 304 stainless(shows surface rust spots occasionally). The new ones I believe are 316(will not show rust). Like I mentioned I just wipe it with wax occasionally and I'm back to new.

Not sure if you paid any attention to it or not when we stopped by Scott, but it still looks new. And we are anchored every weekend at Monroe. Just a coat of polish when I was the boat. All the muck washes off quickly by redropping the anchor a few feet.

Its a very nice upgrade!

Strake, I too bought at Marinepartsdepot... Mine is suppose to be 316... it looks great... Be sure to try looking at the ebay feedback to see what people have offered. I would not pay the "buy at" amount and instead look for the "make offer" ones on ebay. I have the 10kg which replaced the 7.5kg galvanized.

Thanks guys.....

Another thought...... I like the "clean look" of the bow of my neighbors 270 SLX which has his polished SS plow anchor coming THROUGH the bow of his boat on a polished SS roller.

I'm wondering if I can buy that front bow roller assembly from Sea Ray, then cut a slot in the bow of my boat for it to mount and the anchor never comes up on deck, just up into the anchor locker. Anyone tried using that through hull anchor roller on something other than a 270 SLX? :thumbsup:

thanks,

What's the difference between the 304, 314, 316,???? how do you know what you have when you get it???? :huh:

Laymans terms: the higher the number, the less chance of rusting.

Technical: 316 stainless has 2% to 2.5% molybdenum compared to 304, which has about 0.5%. 316 has slightly more nickel and slightly less chromium than 304. The result of these slight differences in chemical composition is that 316 stainless steel is substantially more resistant to corrosion.

304 is the least you would want to use in a Marine environment. 316 is more expensive... Both work just fine however...

BTW, nice bling!!!!

Naturally 316 is a bit more expensive...it has a little bit of
molybdenum (moly) in it, and is used in high corrosion applications. 304 and 316 are made in different alloys; "-L" and "-H", depending on the carbon content. Straight 304 is most common. Also, 304 is softer than 316.
