The "virus" What are your thoughts

It is not a debate. It is a fact. This virus kills, as many other illnesses, and we have the responsibility to ourselves and others to do what we can to understand it and prevent the spread. An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure. In my occupation (EMS) we don't always have the luxury of knowing if a patient is infected with anything or not. So we are trained that everyone (in general) is infected until proven not and take the proper level of protection in each case.
If you do not like the thread, then opt out of it as you would any other thread you choose not to follow. I opt out of threads I have followed many times as I am sure many do.
Be safe out there and make smart decisions to stay out of harms way at ALL times, not just because of this virus.

Leave it to people to come up with the out of ordinary.

Sorry, I needed to put this article somewhere I can refer back to, so I chose here... Here is my concerning takeaway on this matter...

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/02/06/...us-whistleblower-doctor-dies-intl/index.html?

".....Li was hospitalized on January 12 after contracted the virus from one of his patients, and he was confirmed to have the coronavirus on February 1...."

This is a red-flag...If they hospitalize a patient (in this case a doctor they would have put a great deal of effort on) and it takes almost 3 weeks to confirm he has the virus, you can expect the number of "confirmed cases" to skyrocket. I think we are all under the impression that confirmation is happening real-time or at most 24hrs later...WTF three weeks... Read the article and you will learn a bit about the suppression in China.

In China they are preparing sports arenas as make shift hospitals with cots all across the floor. They anticipate the critical mass to become symptomatic around the same time frame.

@El Capitan , where are you seeing this information? Also, before you made ref. to all countries under-reporting. Can you say tht the US is under-reporting?

I can't wrap my head around the WHO's guidance regarding this outbreak. Their job should be health and safety only, not weighing the economic ramifications. I think it's irresposnsible to provide this guidance when it will clearly cost lives. While quarantine and isolation may not stop the spread, it will certainly slow it down and possibly allow other regions to stay ahead of any outbreak.

"We reiterate our call to all countries not to impose restrictions that unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade. Such restrictions can have the effect of increasing fear and stigma, with little public health benefit," Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Tuesday during a briefing to the United Nations' executive board in Geneva.
"Where such measures have been implemented, we urge that they are short in duration, proportionate to the public health risks, and are reconsidered regularly as the situation evolves," he added.

They have to be astutely aware that the data coming from China is inaccurate. Does anyone really believe the number of deaths to date is 565....

Increasing fear is exactly how you get people to comply with practical personal protection measures. I guess WHO wants people to still think this is a joke and to send out more Corona Beer memes....

Nope, not a chance.

Unfortunately over the next couple of months my family and I will be traveling via the airlines. Conferences, spring break and another vacation. It's been on my mind since this started a few weeks ago.

Sorry about the meme.........

Plenty of pictures and information of China prepping stadiums w portable cots lined next to each other.

Someone - random person - I was talking to in the hotel bar. He was recommending a N100 mask from 3M for air travel????

comments, advice? I have a 3-4 hour flight on Sunday.

At the hospital my wife works people are showing up in a panic demanding to buy boxes of masks.

They are out.

@FootballFan
Where are you headed?
P100 is better... Might be overkill ... Keep hands away from face... Gloves are not a bad idea, but still keep hands away from face.

@El Capitan, they think you can buy from a hospital? The hospital should hold all stocks for themselves.

My normal year is 100+ flights.

Sunday flying DFW to Hartford.

DFW to Hartford should be well out of the way. I would just keep hand sanitizers w you using often.

@El Capitan, they think you can buy from a hospital? The hospital should hold all stocks for themselves.

Obviously.

Back w swine and bird people came to ER asking for Tamiflu.

The ER is a gateway for many.

Saw a news article about the cruise ship unloading cases in NJ. The medics who were dealing with the stretcher were not wearing masks.

@Third Edition I think it's irresponsible of the director to make comments like this, when arguably we don't have accurate data...

@FootballFan , I don't know what to say, other than I wished this surprised me. We "assume" that all the money that goes into healthcare and taxes will provide us the proper response when crisis arises. Yet, look at the personal protection given to responders and caregivers when the threat of Ebola hit here. Or, look at how we handled Katrina...I have no idea why they would be allowed to disembark without personnel equipped to handle this. Perhaps the Army should take over...

We are all on our own. Always. Anything else is an illusion. I'm the only one who stands a chance to put my interests first.

Most often things work relatively well. Government, healthcare, and everything else works through averaging. An averaged response to the average situation and averaged for the population. That is what we are seeing with coronavirus. Anything other than average would be seen as too extreme.

Then comes the one where the extreme approach is needed. How long does it take to make that decision?

Does coronavirus warrant extreme approaches? Why let someone else decide?

Safety, charity, and everything else, starts at home. Be informed. I'm not a survivalist, but at the outset of this one I got N99 masks & replacement filters, food, etc. I can sit this out for a long time.

Hope it doesn't come to that.
