The truth about wearing a mask -finally

Stanford is one of the finest research schools in the world. The only sniff you would ever get there is as a janitor.

Go back under the rock you crawled out from last month. Your 15 minutes of troll fame is over. You been have shown to be a racist and just plain stupid.

It seems you’ve exceeded your intellectual capacity and vocabulary such you’ve resorted to what all ignorants do... cast aspersions and insults.

Happy to compete w you in the arena of ideas however I don’t think it’d be much competition.

Capiche? (BTW that’s Italian for understand).

New study out of the University of North Carolina on how the virus spreads and the importance of masking.
Researchers map how coronavirus infection travels through cells of nasal cavity and respiratory tract
A major study of coronavirus infection in human airways adds to evidence that wearing a mask is an important protective step toward limiting transmission of COVID-19.

“If the nose is the dominant initial site from which lung infections are seeded, then the widespread use of masks to protect the nasal passages, as well as any therapeutic strategies that reduce virus in the nose, such as nasal irrigation or antiviral nasal sprays, could be beneficial,”

Anybody who wants to accuse UNC of being liberal, feel free. I will certify as an alumnus that it's totally true, not that it matters as to the quality of the research, especially in the health care arena.

It’s liberal. 40% of students are Democrat. 26% Republican.

Geez, facts keep getting in the way.

Al, I’m a believer that 2+2=4 whether your conservative, communist, socialist, liberal, or unitarian. And Covid certainly doesn’t care what color state you live in.

I tried to read the cell.com document and it had too much technical jargon for me to follow. The unc.edu document appears to be an executive summary type report of the study published above is an interesting stuff. It turns the masks don’t prevent thing on its head by suggesting they can block stuff from getting up the nose.

The notion that the Virus incubation location is the nasal cavity also makes me wonder what impact histamine reactions would have and whether an intentional histamine reaction could be used as a preventative measure. The histamine reaction to Pollen generates A runny nose that by its very nature is the body’s way of expelling the irritant. Of course that would truly make used Kleenex hazardous waste.

As anyone who has ever had a sinus infection knows, nasal irrigation means pouring a liquid in one nostril and letting it pour out the other. Not fun, and I really think based on the to mask, or not to mask debate, should the debate become to irrigate your nose, or not, American civilization is doomed.

Henry, I've had a permanent runny nose for a while now. The doctor tells me it's not uncommon with age but it still ticks me off. It would be ironic if that was an advantage against covid. I agree about irrigation but I've gotten used to it. I buy bulk packages of Arm & Hammer saline injectors that have a little bit of pressure and have gotten used to it. But I can imagine the hue and cry if it turns out actually be an effective preventative or treatment.

If you read my post, I stipulated up front that UNC was liberal, having spent 4 years there during the Vietnam War wearing the uniform. I still love the place, Go Heels.

So, you classify research institutions as liberal or conservative and dismiss findings from places that don't meet whatever standard you use? Must be scary for your patients, I hope you are disclosing that to them.

Coronavirus cases rise in states with relaxed face mask policies

This spring in New England the pollen has been especially brutal and being on hypertension medication makes the use of anti-histamines counterproductive. So Kleenex for the time being is my constant companion. When I read the summary document I had similar thoughts. The first being that all the grumbling I’ve done about runny nose was misplaced, I should have been rejoicing. And then I carried bit farther wondering what would be the reaction if nasal irrigation with a mild solution of something like Listerine became the preventative solution. After all Listerine is, I suppose, a disinfectant.

Explain California. They are spiking as we speak.
I'm not qualified to explain it but will look for analyses that do. But, since they only implemented their masking policy on June 18, right in the middle of the period of the "now" data, I would argue they belonged in the "mask not required" camp for purposes of the analysis.

Henry, you may be on to something. I found this article: http://www.ronaldgwayne.com/2013/01/27/fighting-flu/

This guy recommends swabbing the nose with Listerine among other measures and says it's helped him fight flu, maybe for the same reasons you noticed. The added bonus is that he says it improves runny nose. He admits to not being a medical doctor, just passing on his experience.

If that comes to be the solution to Covid prevention I can see the campaign commercials now, “See I was right, disinfectant works!!”

That’s awfully close to ingesting disinfectant. :)

You should try it. Report back. :D

Here is the the elephant in the room, the left has politicized EVERYTHING to the point conservatives do not have any trust in anything. Institutions of all kinds have been overtaken by the left for their ends.

The leftist playbook is to use the good reputation an institution has to promote its ends. The left uses money and intimidation to keep differing views at bay. The left controls the funding for science much the same way the Vatican or kings did in the past.

Mask use was politicized by authoritarian governors and pushed on the public by social media mobs. It then became a cause, an exercise of power, the left determined to use its Governing, media, and social pressure to force people to do. It was incredible the pressure they put on Trump to wear a mask. (Pleased he did not bow before them.)

Some here have expressed bewilderment at the conflict over this and and only look at it through the prism of practicality, make no mistake about it, they don’t give a rats azz about mask wear, evidenced by their lack of interest in rioters wearing them.

At the end of the day this is all just politics at a level never before seen from the left who will stop at nothing to remove Trump. Yep, it all goes back to raw politics...

Another political hit-job. You really need to do your own research vs reading the papers.

In addition, their data is false. Illinois for example, it is not mandatory to wear a mask in public. I know this because I am here now and I do not wear a mask. Amazing....
Illinois' masking Executive Order: https://news.wttw.com/sites/default/files/article/file-attachments/ExecutiveOrder-2020-38.pdf

"Any individual who is over age two and able to medically tolerate a face covering (a mask or cloth face covering) shall be required to cover their nose and mouth with a face covering when in a public place and unable to maintain a six-foot social distance. This requirement applies whether in an indoor space, such as a store, or in a public outdoor space where maintaining a six-foot social distance is not always possible."

Al,
You silly boy. I bet you think the facts are going to make a difference with Capitan Guano. I was taken to task for calling him the village idiot, so I won’t do that again and let you draw your own conclusions.

Just came back from eating inside Subway. Also went to get ethanol free gas. In both establishments, nobody wore a mask. Just sayin.

That guy could be on to something...long time ago I knew a guy that would snort a shot of whiskey once in a while, I can't recall him ever having a cold.:p
