The false assertion nobody is challenging is why are we distancing and wearing masks?

It is NOT to prevent the spread. All you have to do is look at the infection rates to know that won’t work. Ever wonder why Trump has come full circle on wearing a mask?

Here’s the inconvenient truth about this virus. It’s not going away. It won’t go away until everyone gets through it one way or another.

You will come in contact w it ... eventually whether you wear a mask or not. It is inevitable.

The question people need to come to grips w is what happens then?

If you’re one who believes you can avoid coming in contact w this eventually you’re lying to yourself.

Sooner or later, just when you think you’re safe, when you least expect it, you’ll come in contact w it.

Been saying this all along. No hiding from it. The best is delay, and that cannot be slowed long as humans just live too close and are too interdependent.

Are locations that have been mandating masks (has it been 2 weeks yet?) seeing a drop in numbers of cases? That will be the proof, or lack thereof.
That would only work if the majority of people actually followed the guidance, but they are not. The only evidence you have is comparing other places in the world that don't have a large anti-mask movement. Look outside of your borders.. There is a reason that the US still has one of the highest new case rates.

Yeah, we are a pretty big country with 350+ million people.

Guy I argue with on another board is ultra protective. He wears his mask all the time, except eating. He quarantined for 2 weeks before he took a trip to his parents in the city. He wipes the gas pump down, etc. Well he recently woke up with 5 symptoms and went to get tested. If he can get, then we all will get it.

Creek, are other countries testing their population as much as we are here in the US? (Not making sarcastic comments, asking for real)

NC mandated masks 30 days ago. The number of daily confirmed cases increased during that time period but now is stable with 1800 to 2400 cases per day. Hospitalizations increased over the past thirty days but seem to have stabilized at around 1100. If masks were truly effective we should be seeing a decrease in the number of confirmed cases and hospitalizations.

Mike,

Here is a little spreadsheet that I put together and update occasionally - it is current as of today. Denmark and the UK have more tests. What gets me is these countries in Europe have almost as many deaths with about 1/4 of the cases. The countries were picked simply by being a block and having the total population similar to the US.

Canada is. Like the US, it was a slow start getting the tests and getting them done. Short supply made for bad behavior and hoarding of test kits. But lots of testing here now. And keep in mind we have Provincial medical systems that mean zero cost to the individual to be tested. So no disincentive for people to go get a test.

The province of Nova Scotia (a small province, I admit) just hit a milestone. Zero active cases. None at all.

I am sure whatever party wins this election in the US will want to do a full assessment of the cause/effect of the US experience vs others in the world. The next pandemic may very well be something more nasty and you will want to "get it right".

I would prefer to delay my inevitable contact
to later in the transmission cycle. Better chance of treatment and prevention options :)

Maybe this is an indication of the quality of free health care.

I was in Milwaukee, Wi this past weekend, and I can easily say the majority of people had on masks inside. How can you say the majority of people are not following the guidance? Again, I am not disagreeing, I am trying to learn.

I would like to know this also. In my world in Illinois and also during my trip to Milwaukee, in public places, virtually everyone had on masks. I even saw a few people walking, biking etc with masks.

So where is this coming from that the majority of people are not following the guidance? Like Mike, I am trying to learn.

What price are you willing to pay to achieve that delay? Small business is getting destroyed. Your neighbors business? Your brothers business? Your own business? Just what extraction from society will you take to create the delay you desire?

it is a frustration of mine that we do not have a serious political debate on this question by our elected representatives, we do not account for all the lives that are lost due to the steps to do what we guess we’ll save lives from Covid.

I made two stops this morning going from Indiana to Michigan....both states have mandatory masks in public places....the first stop in Indiana, half were not wearing masks.... including me ....left it in the car - oops....Michigan ...no one had a mask on except me.... both places had about 30 people in the store/restaurant.... nothing scientific just an observation but interesting

Restaurants - seated no one had masks on. Tables were strategically blocked off to enforce distancing. Masks were worn while going to the restroom. It's that way in Illinois also. Standing in line at a gas station in WI - everyone had masks on and the staff was behind a plexiglass shield.

The restaurant I was refering to was a McDonalds in a loves truck stop.... they had only two tables to sit at .... I meant the rest of the store...bathrooms etc

Negative. Look at Chicago. Shut downs, mask mandates, social distancing, positive rates up to 3.7% of test vs 3.1% a week ago. It doesnt matter.
